Speaking on the sidelines of the FIFA Series 2026 that took place in Kigali, Rwanda where his national team went on to lift the mini tournament that also had Kenya, Estonia and Grenada, Kagere revealed his memorable moment for the 21-time Kenyan champions.

“My favourite moment was when I was playing the derby. I used to love it. There is nothing better than playing the derby,” he told SportPesa Blog.

Despite leaving in 2018, Kagere is among the top scorers in the Mashemeji Derby with three goals to his name. Only Sammy ‘Jogoo’ Onyango (6 goals), Dan Sserenkuma (6 goals) and Wilberforce Mulamba (4 goals) are the players with more strikes in the Mashemeji Derby.

Speaking about his departure from the club, Kagere called on fans to understand that his decision was informed by a better opportunity that came calling, insisting that he will always respect the club.

“That is where people fail to understand. From there, I had to get another opportunity that was bigger, so you always have to respect where you came from. Gor Mahia is a big team and I appreciate that,” he said.

The former Rwandese international also noted that he still follows Gor Mahia and called on the club to get the job done against AFC Leopards in the title race for the 25/26 SportPesa League.

“I still miss Nairobi. I am always following the games most times as I still follow the page. They (Gor) have to proceed with momentum because they are a big team in the country and that is why I had to play for them and we got success,” he concluded.
