The men’s national sevens side, Shujaa, finished second in the final leg of the 2026 HSBC SVNS 2 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, staged at the Estadio Nicolau Alayon from March 28–29, reaffirming their place in the World Championship series.
While a title in this leg would have been more ideal for the Kevin Wambua charges after third-place finishes in Nairobi and Montevideo, it was their only loss of the weekend against Belgium on Saturday that proved costly.
They went down 14–12, as Belgium were crowned champions of the leg. Despite both sides being level on 13 points apiece, the head-to-head result locked Shujaa out of the title championship.

Heading into this round, Shujaa needed just two wins to complete their mission, and they accomplished that on Saturday with emphatic victories over Germany and Canada.
Those results secured their qualification for the three-legged Championship series alongside USA Eagles, Germany, and Uruguay, marking a pathway back to HSBC SVNS 1 next season.

Additionally, Shujaa wrapped up the series second overall in HSBC SVNS 2 with 50 points. USA 7s, who finished fourth in Brazil, added 14 points to their tally of 38 to top the standings with 52 points, while Germany placed third with 48 points while Uruguay 44, completed the top four in the qualification bracket.

Shujaa Sunday March 29 recap
Sunday proved productive for Shujaa, who kicked off their campaign with a commanding revenge win over USA 7s, a side they had not beaten in the previous two legs. They cruised to a 31–14 triumph.
In that encounter, the Eagles struck first just two minutes in through Tucker Tricky, whose try was successfully converted to give them an early lead.
However, moments after the restart, Shujaa responded with a brilliant move as George Ooro sliced through the Eagles’ defence to level matters, with Nygel Amaitsa adding the extras.
After sustained pressure, Shujaa stretched their advantage just before halftime through David Nyangige, who dotted down following a clever sequence that saw Ooro skillfully keep the ball alive. They headed into the break leading 12–7.

The second half began with Shujaa pinning USA deep in their own half, and Nyangige grabbed his second try, converting it to widen the gap.
Shortly after, Odongo received a yellow card for a high tackle, handing USA an opportunity to close the deficit with seven uncontested points.
Despite being a man down, Shujaa held firm defensively until they forced a turnover. John Okoth, operating on the left wing, offloaded to Chrisant Ojwang, who dived over to extend the lead.
Just before the final whistle, Shujaa executed another slick move, with Okoth finishing off a well-timed pass from Ojwang on the left flank to seal a crucial third win of the leg.

In their second match of the day, the Wambua-coached side remained composed, dispatching Uruguay 26–14.
Barely a minute into the game, Shujaa drew first blood through George Ooro, who spotted a gap in midfield and surged through to hand his side a 7–0 lead after the conversion.
Samuel Asati then doubled the advantage with a well-worked try after capitalizing on a hard-fought ruck, with the conversion sailing through successfully.
Uruguay responded with a try of their own to cut the deficit to five points before halftime and, shortly after the restart, edged ahead to take the lead.

However, Festus Shiasi and Ojwang led a spirited comeback with impressive tries, while Amaitsa contributed six points from conversions, as Shujaa secured their fourth victory of the weekend.
With their qualification confirmed, Shujaa will compete in the SVNS World Championship Series, featuring the top 12 men’s and women’s teams (eight from Division 1 and four from Division 2) across three events in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux to determine the annual world champions
