The men’s national sevens side, Shujaa, are through to the 2026 World Championship series after demolishing Canada 40-0 to secure their second victory at the third leg of the Series 2 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday.
Coming into this final stage of the HSBC SVNS 2, Shujaa sat third with 32 points and needed at least two wins to position themselves among the top four outfits, who are guaranteed a spot in this three-legged Champions event – a pathway to the HSBC SVNS 1 next season.
They had kicked off the leg with a dominant win, dismantling Germany 38-7 on Saturday evening. However, despite picking up a bonus point, they fell to a high-flying Belgium 14-12 in the second match of the day.

In this third contest of the day, Shujaa started on a high note as they managed to be the first side to draw first blood through a tap-in by Vincent Onyala, who dived over the whitewash to give Shujaa a 5-0 lead after the conversion sailed wide.
Two minutes later, they managed to double their advantage as Onyala, who had been impressive from the first match of the day, kicked the ball forward, went through, and just touched down in the corner of the sticks. Nygel Amaitsa added the extras as they took a 12-0 lead.
A moment after the restart, Shujaa grabbed a third try after Nygel Amaitsa managed to offload a clever cross to Festus Shiasi on the left wing. Shiasi made no mistake to give Kenya the lead, while Amaitsa converted well for the extras as they went into the break leading 19-0.
The second half kicked off with Shujaa managing to maintain their dominance. It was George Oroo who surged through the defense to extend the lead to 26-0 after Amaitsa’s conversion.
Later, Samuel Asati would pass a good offload to Nygel Amaitsa on the left wing, and Amaitsa managed to make it a 33-0 ballgame after he also converted.
Onyala was on a mission to grab his hat-trick try of the day after he surged through well on the right wing, but he acted unselfishly and simply gave Dennis Bukuse the ball to also get on the scoresheet.
Shujaa picked up the important 40-0 win to advance to the World Championship in Hong Kong next month, ensuring they fight for a top-eight finish to earn promotion back into the HSBC SVNS 1 next season.
