Gor Mahia aim to cement summit lead at home against daring Kariobangi Sharks

Gor Mahia’s midfielder Jackson Dwang starred on Saturday, March 21, as he was on target to help his side secure a demanding 2-1 home win over Shabana FC in the Round of 25, leading the charge in the SportPesa League team of the week.

Dwang, who found the net in the 21st minute after a brilliant assist from Ebenezer Adukwaw during a counterattack, unleashed a strike with his left foot that helped Gor extend their lead at the summit to seven points – 56 points compared to 49 for AFC Leopards in second place.

On top of that, his stellar display, which also included an assist for the second goal from Alpha Onyango, did not just earn him a spot in the gameweek’s top performers but also earned the 23-year-old a call-up to the South Sudan national team ahead of their double-header in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Djibouti.

Following Dwang’s heroics over the weekend, Tisini has put together the Team of the Week for Round 25, featuring ten clubs in total.

Gor Mahia leads the way with two representatives, while Bidco United, Sofapaka, APS Bomet, Kariobangi Sharks, Ulinzi Stars, Kakamega Homeboyz, Mathare United, Posta Rangers, and Mara Sugar each have one player.

SportPesa League Team of the Week for Round 25

Goalkeeper – Issa Emuria – Bidco United

Emuria has been one of the dependable figures for Bidco United as they push to avoid the drop this season, currently sitting in a precarious 16th place with 22 points.

On Saturday, Emuria delivered a composed performance as his side snatched a point at home against bottom-placed Sofapaka in a goalless draw – marking their fourth match without defeat (one win, three draws).

He was named man of the match in that encounter, pulling off more than five clean saves against Sofapaka’s threats while also making sharp claims and successful run-outs.

Defender – Robinson Musungu – Mara Sugar

Musungu was a rock at the back on Saturday when they hosted APS Bomet in a match that ended in a goalless stalemate.

That point helped the Sugar Millers stretch their unbeaten run to six matches two wins and four draws, keeping them in 12th place on the log with 30 points.

Defender – Ian Omondi – Mathare United

A solid performer on Sunday as they visited Murang’a SEAL at the SportPesa Arena, helping his side stage a comeback to force a 1-1 draw.

Omondi was named man of the match after contributing with brilliant interceptions, blocks, and timely clearances as they grabbed a point on the road.

Wingback – Iddrisu Shaibu – Sofapaka

Iddrisu was a standout on Saturday as his side earned a point away from home at the Wang’uru Stadium in Nyeri against Bidco United in a goalless draw.

That result marked the first point for Batoto ba Mungu after going eight straight SportPesa League matches without even tasting a draw in their survival battle.

Wingback – Clifford Odhiambo – APS Bomet

Helped his side claim a point on the road on Saturday against Mara Sugar. Odhiambo was named man of the match, putting in solid clearances, successful interceptions, and blocks, while also pushing forward to create shooting chances for himself.

Central midfielder – Jackson Dwang – Gor Mahia

Scored the opening goal for Gor Mahia in their encounter against Shabana FC as they secured a 2–1 win on Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Dwang was named man of the match and also played a key role as the architect of the winning goal, which was headed in by Alpha Onyango deep in the second half.

Central midfielder – Alpha Onyango – Gor Mahia

He was the captain of the day for Gor Mahia in their victory over Shabana.

While Dwang grabbed the headlines, Onyango netted the late goal that not only stretched their lead to seven points in the title race but also extended their unbeaten streak to 15 straight matches in the SportPesa League.

Winger – Jackson Macharia – Posta Rangers

Macharia was the hero for Posta Rangers on Sunday as they secured back-to-back wins by beating Kariobangi Sharks 2–1 at the Police Sacco Stadium.
He bagged a brace to seal the victory, deservedly earning man of the match honors for his sharp play and helping his side take home precious three points on the road.

Winger – Humphrey Aroko – Kariobangi Sharks

His side may have lost 2–1 to Posta Rangers at home on Sunday, but Aroko who has been in red-hot form recently, managed to find the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season. He now sits just six strikes behind top scorer Joe Waithira, who has 15.

Forward – Oliver Majaka – Kakamega Homeboyz

Majaka scored the equalizer as his side fought back from behind to snatch a point at home against Bandari FC at the Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.

Forward – Paul Okoth – Ulinzi Stars

After a long goal drought in the SportPesa League, Paul Okoth rediscovered his scoring touch on Sunday, getting on the scoresheet as his side claimed three valuable points against Nairobi United in a 2–1 win.

As they ended their nine-match winless run, Okoth was also named man of the match for his influential performance, helping his side secure a vital victory in their relegation scrap to avoid the axe at the end of the season.

SportPesa League Coach of the Week – Round 25 – Muling Ndeto – Ulinzi Stars

In his first match in charge of Ulinzi Stars, Ndeto managed to take all three points just after taking over the reins from departed coach Stephen Ochola, as the Soldiers continue to fight to stave off relegation.
