- Shujaa managed to secure back-to-back wins on Saturday night after falling to USA in the ongoing HSBC SVNS 2 in Montevideo, Uruguay on Saturday, March 21.
- They defeated Canada 19-5 and then dominated Belgium 20-0, setting a strong tone for their campaign.
- Meanwhile, the Kenya Lionesses suffered their second loss of the day despite claiming a narrow 12-10 victory over Argentina.
After a rocky start at the ongoing second leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 in Montevideo, Uruguay, the men’s national sevens side, Shujaa, managed to lift themselves with back-to-back victories on Saturday night.
The Kevin Wambua charges had kicked off the leg on a sour note, where they let a 10-0 lead slip from their grasp against the USA Eagles 7s, eventually losing narrowly 14-10 in that opener.
However, later in the night, they took on Canada men’s 7s, where they managed to bounce back and beat them 19-5.
Chrisant Ojwang, Floyd Wabwire, and Kevin Wekesa managed to give Shujaa the lead in the first half, where two of the tries were successfully converted by Nygel Amaitsa in a rain-soaked Estadio Charrua.
Ian Jones managed to give Canada a consolation try that went unconverted, as Shujaa picked up their first win of the day, setting the stage going into the third encounter, where they faced Belgium men’s 7s.

Just to make sure they made a statement, Shujaa did not disappoint in this clash, and they managed to secure a 20-0 win in the midnight fixture East Time.
Kevin Wekesa managed to open the scoring with a try as he grabbed his second of the day, which went unconverted, while Vincent Onyala was the second person to touch the wet whitewash, also with his second try of the day.
Patrick Odongo finally managed to see his name in the try book with the third for Shujaa, while Wabwire, just as in the Canada match, also got his name on the scoresheet, with Amaitsa missing all the conversions.

But as much as they can determine the standings, they went all in to get the second victory of the day.
Now, Shujaa, who are pushing hard to be in the top four and remain in that rage, will be looking forward to ending this leg on a high note when they take on a very strong side in this tournament, Germany, who are yet to lose a single match.
The two will meet at 9:55 pm EAT; they will then wrap up this leg with a clash against hosts Uruguay at 12:48 am.
On the other hand, the women’s national team, the Kenya Lionesses, after falling in their first match just like Shujaa, managed to bounce back with a win against Argentina, whom they narrowly beat 12-10.
The highly contested match under the rain saw Kenya Lionesses go into the first half leading 5-0 thanks to Janet Okello’s try that was unconverted, while in the second half, Argentina managed to take an early lead of 10-5 from Malena Noemi Diaz and Josefina Padellaro tries that went unconverted.
But the Lionesses managed to shake off all the pressure with a final try in the dying minutes through Sinaida Nyachio, as she also converted it too, to pick their first win of the day 12-10 after they had lost 19-5 to China women’s 7s.

As the Simon Odongo charges hoped to carry that momentum into their third match of the day against Spain, things did not go their way, with them narrowly losing 19-14.
Spain took the lead through Maria Garcia and Juana Stella tries, which were converted, while the Lionesses tried to mount a comeback with tries from Edith Nariaka and Janet Okello, which were converted.
But Stella’s second try of the day sank the Lionesses to their second defeat of the day.
Now, Kenya Lionesses will aim to finish the job on a high note when they first take on African rivals South Africa in the first match of Day Two at 8:23 pm EAT, and they will wrap up this leg with a clash against Brazil 7s at 10:53 pm EAT.
