  • Gor Mahia sit at the top of the SportPesa League table on 53 points.

The 25/26 SportPesa League will come to a standstill when record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia welcome a hurting Shabana at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

While the visitors will be desperately fighting to rise from back-to-back league defeats that contributed to the recent sacking of head coach Peter Okidi, the hosts will be out to cement their dominance over the Gusii-based club and extend their lead at the SportPesa League summit.

Since their promotion to the topflight from the 23/24 campaign, Shabana are yet to record a league win over the 21-time Kenyan champions in the five occassions they have met (D2 L3).

That will be a record Tore Bobe will be looking to erase as they seek to put a dent on K’Ogalo’s charge for a record-extending twenty second title.

Gor Mahia vs Shabana preview

At the moment, Gor Mahia appear unstoppable as they occupy first position with 53 points after 24 matches.

The Charles Akonnor-coached side have also not been beaten since their Mashemeji Derby loss against bitter rivals AFC Leopards back in December 2025, winning ten and drawing four games in that period.

It is that form that the league leaders will be banking on as they close in on their first title since the 23/24 campaign.

They will have to do so without the services of key defender Sylvester Owino who picked up an injury.

“It is a very important match and we have to do our best to maintain the level of momentum that we have. We have seen them a couple of times and we need to play tactically. Unfortunately, the coach is not there anymore so we are focused on what to do and get the three points,” Akonnor said.

Aside from seeking their first-ever league win over K’Ogalo since returning on the big stage, Shabana have further motivation as club patron Simba Arati has promised them a cash incentive of 1 million should they manage to get over the line against the biggest club in the land.

Head-to-head and Current form

Historically, Gor Mahia has held the upper hand in this rivalry, with Shabana struggling to find a breakthrough against the record champions since the 1980s.

In 41 meetings, Gor Mahia has claimed 25 wins while Shabana has managed only 4 victories with 12 clashes ending in stalemate.

Since Shabana’s return to the topflight, they have failed to beat Gor Mahia in their five attempts.

Recent Form

Shabana FC: L-L-W-W-W (9 points from last 15)

Victory for Gor Mahia will move them to 56 points, further insulating their lead at the top to ten points.

A shock win for Shabana could provide a fairy-tale start for interim coach Andrew Ongwae.
