SportPesa League side Shabana FC have parted ways with head coach Peter Okidi, with assistant Andrew Ongwae stepping in temporarily as the club hunts for a permanent replacement.

Okidi was shown the door on Tuesday, March 17, following a 2-1 home defeat to Kariobangi Sharks in Round 24 of the SportPesa League.

“Shabana Football Club wishes to inform its supporters, partners, and the general public that the Club has mutually agreed to part ways with Head Coach Peter Okidi. This decision has been reached amicably and with mutual respect, following constructive discussions between both parties,” read part of the club’s statement released on Tuesday.

Okidi was the mastermind behind the team’s top-five finish last season, as they ended the campaign in fifth place.

Entering the current season, the Glamour Boys remained firmly in the title conversation, with dreams still flickering. However, Okidi departs with the team sitting third on the log with 40 points and 13 adrift of leaders Gor Mahia.

Sunday’s loss marked his sixth defeat of the season, alongside 11 wins and seven draws a respectable return for a side now in their third year in the SportPesa League since earning promotion in 2023.

Back then, they narrowly escaped relegation before Sammy Omollo ‘Pamzo’ steadied the ship.

Okidi joined the Kisii-based outfit in October 2024 as an assistant coach before stepping up to replace Pamzo, who left under a cloud following a string of poor results.

His first game in charge was a 1-0 loss to Nairobi City Stars and he kicked off a reign that spanned 18 months.

During that period, Okidi claimed 25 wins in 52 matches, with 14 draws and 13 losses, including seven defeats this term.

Beyond league duty, Okidi guided Shabana to the Round of 16 in last season’s FKF Cup, where they were edged out 1-0 by Kakamega Homeboyz.

This season, they repeated the feat by reaching the same stage after thrashing Muhoroni Youth 5-1 in the Round of 32. In total, he oversaw 57 matches, racking up 29 wins, 14 draws, and 14 losses.

The club remains on the hunt for Okidi’s successor with just 10 games left to play. They are hoping to close the gap on high-flying defending champions Gor Mahia and second-placed AFC Leopards, who sit just three points ahead.
