Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno delivered a night to remember after scoring the decisive penalty to send Richards Bay FC into the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno delivered a night to remember after scoring the decisive penalty to send Richards Bay FC into the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Siwelele FC in South Africa.

The thrilling encounter, played on Sunday night, ended 3-3 after extra time before Richards Bay held their nerve in sudden death, with Otieno stepping up to convert the winning spot-kick and seal qualification for the Natal Rich Boys.

Richards Bay head coach made several changes to his starting line-up, restoring Siyabonga Nzama, Thembela Sikhakhane and Sanele Barns to the team. Siwelele, meanwhile, retained key players such as Vincent Pule, Grant Margeman, Kgaogelo Sekgota, Yanda Mfolozi and Ricardo Goss from their previous outing.

Siwelele started brightly and nearly took an early lead inside five minutes when Chibuike Ohizu found space in the box following a looping cross from Pule, but his first-time effort from close range lacked conviction and went wide.

The visitors made their pressure count in the 19th minute when Margeman created space outside the area and fired a powerful low shot into the bottom corner to give Siwelele the lead. However, Sekgota was forced off through injury ten minutes before halftime and was replaced by Ghampani Lungu.

Richards Bay responded just before the break when Thabani Zuke met a curling delivery at the back post, only to see his effort crash off the woodwork. Margeman later threatened to double his tally with another long-range strike, but Otieno was alert and produced a fine save to keep his side in the contest.

The hosts finally found their breakthrough after the interval as S’bangani Zulu unleashed a long-range shot that took a deflection past Goss and into the net. Despite missed chances from both sides, the score remained level at the end of regulation time, forcing extra time.

Richards Bay struck twice in extra time through Mahala, who finished from close range before adding a second moments later after latching onto a layoff from Barns. Siwelele, however, refused to go quietly.

An own goal from Zuke and a composed finish by substitute Siphelele Luthuli brought them back level and sent the match to penalties.

In the shoot-out, Ian Otieno emerged as the unlikely hero. After both sides matched each other kick for kick, the Kenyan international stepped up in sudden death and calmly slotted home the winning penalty, sparking wild celebrations among the Richards Bay faithful.

The victory not only sends Richards Bay into the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup but also underlines Otieno’s growing influence and composure on big occasions, a big boost for both club and country.
