Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor credits set pieces in Sofapaka win
“It’s very really exciting because this week we trained a lot on that, on our set pieces, and we encourage them to go in and make sure we get something out of it ,”He explained.
He expressed praise for Frank Odhiambo who recently rejoined Gor Mahia from Djugardens in Sweden.
“And of course, I’m also very happy for Frank who was in the starting eleven for his first time and he scored. I mean the team has gotten the momentum and we are moving forward, which is very, very good for us.
Well I think we were tactically very sound. We played the Sofapaka game, game at ease. All the things that we wanted to do, we did it. In the first half, we were very, very a bit superior than the opponent,” he remarked.
Despite the comfortable three-goal cushion, Akonnor maintained a high standard for his players regarding their second-half performance.
He observed that while they continued to create chances, there was a slight dip in the team’s finishing.
“What was not too good is what we did in the second half. We created a lot of chances and we must be ambitious, you know. In terms of, you’ve scored three, it doesn’t matter. If you get the next three, you have to score. That was the only thing, but I think we can only be proud of the boys,” the coach stated.

Looking ahead at the title race, Akonnor remains humble despite holding the top spot on the table.
“Well it means a lot, but we still have to be watching around and make sure we keep the position, keep it going. You know it is said that it is not over until it’s over, and we have AFC Leopards who are also somehow tying their best to push us.
It is a very good competition and I personally like it. But what is important is that we are focused, we maintain the level in which we are, we maintain the position, and we see at the end of the season what happens.”
After the big win over Sofapaka, focus for the record champions now shifts to Siaya County for the FKF Cup Round of 64 fixture against Dero FC at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium.
