SportPesa League’s December Player of the Month Joe Waithira downplayed the dramatic 3-2 defeat to Gor Mahia on Wednesday afternoon, citing that anything can happen in a game of football and they need to remain focused.

Waithira opened the scoring for his side in the third minute of the game, with what was his eighth goal of the 2025/26 SportPesa League campaign.

Francis Memusi made it two with a lovely lob of Gad Matthews in the Gor goal after a mesmerizing counter attack. With a two-goal advantage in the 18th minute, all seemed rosy for the visitors.

However, the game was a tale of two halves, as the 2-0 halftime lead was not enough to keep their 10-game unbeaten streak alive. K’Ogalo turned the game on its head with a flurry of second half chances.

“We started the game off well and I was pleased to open the scoring for my team.

“However, we all know what can happen in a game of football. It’s very unfortunate that we could not get anything from the game, now we switch our focus to the upcoming fixtures,” the dynamic attacking midfielder stated.

Gor made two changes at halftime bringing on Enock Morrison and Ebenezer Adukwaw and they halved the deficit minutes later after a costly mistake from Mustapha Oduor who mishandled the ball for Felix Olouch to steer it in.

Paul Ochuoga’s fierce shot leveled matters before Ebenezer Assifuah scored on his debut to guarantee all three points for the record Kenyan league winners.

“We cannot lose our cool or choose to focus on this game. The result was unfortunate but we have to pick up the pieces and focus on what’s ahead,” the skipper added.

“Our secret is hard work and prayers. They have brought us this far and they will get us back on track.

Murang’a have been on a steady upward trend since Osborne Monday took over as head coach, boasting the longest unbeaten record in the league until the defeat. The result leaves them in ninth place with 21 points from 16 games.

They now switch their focus to a home match against Bidco United on Sunday, looking to bounce back from the hiccup to return to winning ways.

Gor on the other hand reclaimed top spot with the win, level on 30 points with second place AFC Leopards, ahead of their match against Mara Sugar on Sunday.
