Nairobi United were forced to settle for a share of the spoils after playing out an entertaining 1-1 draw against Ulinzi Stars in a SportPesa League encounter staged at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

It was a match filled with tactical tweaks, moments of individual brilliance, and goalkeeping heroics as both sides walked away with a point after 90 pulsating minutes.

Coming into the fixture on the back of a 2-0 defeat to AFC Leopards, Nairobi United head coach Salim Ali rang several changes to his starting lineup in a bid to freshen things up.

Shaffic Ssebyala and Roy Okal were introduced into midfield, while David Wafula earned a starting berth in place of John Otieno, who was away on compassionate leave.

On the opposite bench, Ulinzi Stars coach Stephen Ochola was also forced into changes, with Kafero leading the line in place of the injured Paul Okoth, while Emilio Brian and Staphord Odhiambo returned to the starting eleven.

Both teams settled quickly, with Nairobi United showing early intent through the flanks.

Ovella Ochieng’ was particularly lively on the right wing, repeatedly using his pace and direct running to trouble the Ulinzi defence. The Soldiers, on the other hand, tried to stretch the Nai Bois backline with long balls played behind the defence.

The breakthrough arrived as early as the ninth minute. Ovella Ochieng’ beat his marker with a marauding run down the right before delivering a teasing cross that evaded everyone in the box and fell kindly to youngster Dancan Omala.

The forward showed great composure, controlling the ball with one touch before unleashing a thunderous strike that flew past goalkeeper Ernest Mohammed.

It was Omala’s third goal of the SportPesa League season and Ochieng’s fifth assist, underlining his growing influence in the team.

The goal opened up the contest, with Nairobi United pushing for a second. Emilio Brian came close after being set up by a good delivery from Muchiri, only to blaze his effort over the bar.

Kevin Otiende then tested Timothy Odhiambo with a fierce long-range shot in the 20th minute, forcing the Ulinzi keeper into a fine save.

Michael Karamor also went close with a double effort that narrowly missed the target, while Staphord Odhiambo’s header was well saved to keep the scoreline unchanged.

Nairobi United suffered a setback when goal scorer Omala was forced off with an injury, making way for Majaliwa Charo.

Despite that, they continued to threaten, with Ovella Ochieng’ seeing his low shot tipped away in the 38th minute.

Ulinzi responded through Tellena Ochieng’, whose powerful 40-yard effort forced Ernest Mohammed into a crucial save just before halftime.

Ulinzi Stars emerged from the break rejuvenated after making a triple substitution, introducing Evans Odhiambo, Joseph Nyale, and Chibato.

The changes had an immediate impact as the Soldiers piled on pressure, with Ernest Mohammed pulling off a series of saves to deny Muchiri and Nyale.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 69th minute when Evans Odhiambo rose highest to meet Bonface Muchiri’s cross, powering a header into the net to restore parity.

Both sides had chances late on, with Nyale and Charo coming close, but Timothy Odhiambo’s late save ensured Ulinzi Stars held on for a crucial point, bringing an entertaining contest to an even conclusion.

Meanwhile, at Kasarani Annex, Kariobangi Sharks woes continued as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Posta Rangers.

Humphrey Aroko scored his 5th goal of the season which was cancelled out by Posta Rangers defender Dinken Mwema,the draw leaves Kariobangi Sharks routed at the bottom end of the table heading into the second half of the season.
