Nairobi United head into the contest buoyed by a convincing 3-1 away win over Shabana FC, a result that lifted them to ninth place on 19 points and underlined their growing belief at top-flight level.

For a side playing its debut season in the SportPesa League, the Naibois have shown admirable resilience, combining tactical discipline under Coach Nicholas Muyoti with an increasing cutting edge in attack led by Michael Karamor, Ovella Ochieng’ and Dancan Omala.

That attacking confidence was on full display in Gusii, where Michael Karamor and Duncan Omala ran the show, Omala grabbing a brace to open his tally for the Naibois in the SportPesa League.

The duo are expected to lead the line once again, with head coach likely to retain the same starting XI that delivered the morale-boosting win.

The attack will also see Ovella Ochieng’ facing his immediate former club with Coach Nicholas Muyoti also having featured for Afc Leopards as a player and also an assistant coach.

The hosts have also moved decisively in the mid-season transfer window, bringing in experienced midfielder Roy Okal from Sofapaka and attacker John Njuguna from Tusker, additions meant to add depth and experience as they push to climb closer to the top four and compete in the CAF Confederations Cup Group Stage.

AFC Leopards, meanwhile, arrive for this encounter licking their wounds after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz in the Ingo Derby from a first minute goal by Henry Omollo.

Despite the setback, Ingwe remain third on the table with 24 points, level with second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz and fourth-placed Tusker but 2 points shy off the top spot held by record Sportpesa League champions Gor Mahia meaning victory at Nyayo could propel them to the summit.

The pressure is firmly on Leopards, who are eyeing to bounce back to winning ways.

Goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi is expected to continue between the posts after a solid display in the loss to Homeboyz, while changes could be made further upfield as Kelly Madada, Kennedy Owino and Samuel Ssenyonjo all who started from the bench in their 1-0 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz push for starting roles.

This fixture also marks the first-ever competitive meeting between Nairobi United and AFC Leopards, adding an extra layer of intrigue as a new rivalry is born.

Nairobi United captain John Otieno believes his side are ready for the challenge.

“It is a tough game, more so because they have a good fan base backing them and they are in the title race,” Otieno said. “But as Naibois we are taking it one game at a time and we are confident of getting maximum points because we have our season targets.”

Midfielder Shami Kibwana echoed that confidence while acknowledging the threat Leopards pose. “They are coming as wounded lions after the Homeboyz loss,” he noted.

“But we are back on our feet and on a good momentum. It’s going to be a good match.” Kibwana also pointed to United’s growing attacking threat, adding, “To be in the title race you have to be scoring, and I’m happy we are now finding our footing.”

With both teams boasting goal threats and plenty at stake, Nyayo Stadium is set for a pulsating afternoon as Nairobi United seek to edge closer to the summit while AFC Leopards aim to dethrone Gor Mahia from the summit. The match will be live on Azam TV.
