Hugo Broos laments missed chances as South Africa bow out of AFCON 2025

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos was left to rue missed opportunities after Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations journey came to an end following a 2–1 defeat to Cameroon in the Round of 16.

While the Indomitable Lions marched into the quarter-finals, the Belgian tactician felt the scoreline did not accurately reflect the balance of play, particularly during the opening stages of the contest.

Bafana Bafana started the match on the front foot, showing composure and intent against a Cameroonian side known for its physicality and experience at this level.

Broos admitted that his team executed the game plan well early on and created chances that could have changed the outcome had they been taken.

“I think we started the game very well and created two or three chances early on,” Broos said after the match. “At that moment, I felt we were the better team.”

However, South Africa’s promising start was undone by Cameroon’s ability to punish lapses, even when not dominating possession.

Broos pointed to the opening goal as a key moment in the match, suggesting it came against the run of play and shifted momentum in Cameroon’s favour.

“Cameroon mainly played on the counter-attack. On the goal they scored, they were a bit lucky… the ball was blocked, fell again and they finished,” he explained.

Despite falling behind, Broos remained encouraged by his side’s performance in the first half and urged his players to maintain the same intensity after the interval. That optimism, however, was quickly tested when Cameroon struck again shortly after the restart, leaving South Africa with a mountain to climb.

“We wanted to push in the second half, but conceding so quickly was difficult,” Broos said. “Suddenly, we had to score two goals.”

To their credit, Bafana Bafana refused to fold. A late goal reignited belief, and South Africa pushed hard in search of an equaliser during the closing stages. Cameroon, drawing on their tournament pedigree, defended resolutely to see out the game.

“We still had chances even after making it 2-1. In the last minutes they defended very well,” Broos added. “It is a big disappointment not to qualify, but I can not be unhappy with the way we played. Cameroon deserved to go through.”

The defeat marked a painful end to South Africa’s AFCON 2025 campaign, which had shown flashes of promise and growth under Broos.

Bafana Bafana advanced from the group stage at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a hard-fought 3–2 win over Zimbabwe, finishing second in Group B behind Egypt with victories over Angola and Zimbabwe and a loss to the Pharaohs.

However the 2–1 defeat to Cameroon in the Round Of 16 will now see Hugo Broos and his charges shift focus toward the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup while acknowledging areas for improvement.

South Africa have already qualified for the World Cup in North America their first appearance since 2010 after topping their CAF qualifying group with a strong campaign that included a 3–0 win over Rwanda and direct qualification ahead of Nigeria and Benin.

At the World Cup, Bafana Bafana are set to open their Group stage against co-hosts Mexico on June 11, 2026, and will also face South Korea and a European play-off winner as they aim to make an impact on football’s biggest stage.
