Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia’s journey back to the CAF Champions League evaporated in just the first preliminary round of the 2026 edition after a nerve-shredding 7-1 demolition by Egyptian giants Pyramids FC.
K’Ogalo suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat away from home on Sunday at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, adding more wounds to their 2-0 home defeat in the first leg played at home some weeks ago.
However, despite the humiliating exit, the 22-time SportPesa League champions will not leave the Champions League empty-handed, as they will still pocket some millions for reaching this round.

How much Gor Mahia will earn after CAF Champions League exit
To the consolation of Gor, the Confederation of African Football is set to give the Kenyan giants a USD 100,000 (approximately KSh 12.9 million) solidarity fee for their participation.
As much as it will be some money for consolation, Gor will still miss out on a large pool of cash that they could have earned had they progressed beyond the preliminary rounds.
That is Gor, who have not reached the group stage in the modern CAF Champions League format, saw a total of USD 700,000 (90.5 million Kenya Shillings) elude them that they could have earned had they reached the group stages of this edition.
A further USD 900,000 (KSh 116.4 million) was also waiting for them had they made a historic quarterfinal appearance, with the semifinalists set to earn USD 1.2 million (KSh 155.2 million), the runners-up USD 2 million (KSh 258.7 million), while the eventual champions could walk away with a massive USD 6 million (KSh 776.1 million) for lifting the coveted title.
For now, all that will remain a dream for Charles Akonnor’s men.
As much as the consolation money still sounds good, what they have gained more from the two editions is the valuable experience and lessons.
Akonnor has already blasted his players over the performance and is now turning his attention forward to the league campaign, which is set to kick off this coming weekend, when they begin their title defence against Murang’a SEAL.
“Now the Champions League is over, and I must say it’s rather unfortunate. We’ve shown videos, we’ve talked about it, and the errors keep recurring. It is about time players wake up because this is their job, this is what they are paid for, and you cannot keep making such mistakes.”
