The Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2025, has reached one of its most pulsating moments, with the fixtures for the Round of 16 now confirmed.

The tournament, being held in Morocco, enjoyed a compelling group stage that saw 24 nations compete for a place in the next round.

However, the field has now been narrowed to the 16 contenders who will battle for the crown with six teams have been shown the exit.

Notable departures include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Gabon and Patson Daka’s Zambia, alongside Botswana, Equatorial Guinea, and Uganda and Comoros, who also failed to advance.

The knockout stage will unfold from Saturday, 3 January, to Tuesday, 6 January.

The nations that have progressed are Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Tunisia, DR Congo, Benin, Mali, Tanzania, and Mozambique.

Two matches will kick off the knockout phase on Saturday, December 3.

The 2021 champions, Senegal, will face Sudan at the Grand Stade de Tangier, with kick-off at 7pm EAT / 5pm local time.

Later that evening, Mali tackle Tunisia (10pm EAT / 8pm local time) at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

Mali will be pursuing a maiden continental crown, while Tunisia aims to replicate their 2004 triumph.

The action continues on Sunday with two blockbuster fixtures, featuring both favorites and underdogs.

Hosts Morocco meet Tanzania at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat on Sunday from 7pm EAT / 5pm local time.

An expectant crowd will roar them on as they seek a first continental title in 50 years.

Morocco topped Group A, while Tanzania qualified as one of the four best third-placed sides from Group C.

Then, a must-watch encounter will see two African giants – South Africa and Cameroon lock horns later that same day at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat (10pm EAT / 8pm local time).

This pits coach Hugo Broos against the very side he led to the title in 2017.

Meanwhile, Egypt, the record seven-time winners, have not lifted the trophy since 2010 a lengthy wait for the Pharaohs’ faithful.

They face Benin on Monday (7pm EAT / 5pm local time) at the Grand Stade d’Agadir.

Later that evening, Nigeria among the most impressive sides in the group stages, will play Mozambique.

Kick-off is set for 10pm EAT / 8pm local time at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, as the Super Eagles seek to go one better than their silver medal finish in 2023.

Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet on Tuesday at 7pm EAT / 5pm local time at the Stade Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan in Rabat.

The round concludes with a clash between defending champions Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso at 10pm EAT / 8pm local time at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

The quarter-finals are scheduled for 9-10 January, with the final set for 18 January at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah.
