Salum’s thunderbolt keeps Tanzania dream breathing at AFCON 2025

Tanzania’s Africa Cup of Nations journey remains alive, fragile but burning, after a gritty 1-1 draw against Tunisia in their decisive Group C encounter at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

In a night charged with tension and consequence, it was Feisal Salum’s moment of brilliance early in the second half that rescued the Taifa Stars and ensured their historic hunt for a maiden knockout-stage appearance did not end in heartbreak.

Coming into the contest, the arithmetic was clear. Tanzania needed something tangible to stay in the conversation, while Tunisia were desperate to avoid another premature AFCON exit following their disappointment in 2023.

The opening exchanges were frantic, Tanzania pressing aggressively and refusing to show the occasion any reverence.

Their energy unsettled Tunisia early, forcing hurried clearances and drawing the crowd into the contest. However, despite their intent, clear-cut chances proved elusive.

Tunisia gradually settled, dictating spells of possession through Ellyes Skhiri and Ferjani Sassi, probing patiently rather than forcing the issue.

The breakthrough came just before the interval and tilted the contest Tunisia’s way.

A clumsy defensive moment inside the area gifted Ismaël Gharbi the chance from the spot, and the midfielder made no mistake, calmly slotting home to give the Carthage Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

For Tanzania, it was a psychological blow conceding so late after holding firm for much of the half.

But if the first half tested Tanzania’s resolve, the second half showcased their belief. Barely moments after the restart, the Taifa Stars struck with devastating effect.

Picking up the ball outside the box, Feisal Salum shifted it onto his right foot and unleashed a thunderous drive that arrowed into the bottom corner, leaving the Tunisian goalkeeper rooted to the spot. It was a strike worthy of the occasion clean, decisive, and full of conviction.

The equaliser transformed the rhythm of the match. Tanzania grew in confidence, pushing higher up the pitch, with Simon Msuva and Haji Mnoga stretching Tunisia’s back line.

Mnoga came agonisingly close with a header that drifted wide, while Tunisia responded through Seifeddine Jaziri, whose powerful effort was brilliantly tipped over by Hussein Masalanga.

The final stages were played on a knife-edge. Tunisia pressed with urgency, launching balls into the box and testing Tanzania’s defensive organisation.

Sassi’s late long-range effort was bravely blocked as bodies flew in the penalty area, symbolising Tanzania’s refusal to yield.

At the other end, Tanzania used game management wisely, winning fouls and slowing the tempo whenever possible.

When the final whistle blew, the draw felt heavier for Tunisia than Tanzania. For the Taifa Stars, it was another step forward proof of growth, resilience, and tactical maturity.

Feisal Salum’s strike may yet be remembered as the goal that kept a nation dreaming, as Tanzania head into the final reckoning knowing their AFCON story is still being written.
