Nairobi United’s fleet-footed winger Michael Ovella Ochieng has outlined the two key factors that earned him a recall to the national team, Harambee Stars, after a lengthy absence.
Ochieng is among the 24 players who have travelled with head coach Benni McCarthy for two high-profile FIFA International friendlies in Antalya, Turkey, where Harambee Stars will face Equatorial Guinea and Senegal during the November FIFA international break.
Kenya will open their campaign against Equatorial Guinea on November 14 at the Emir Complex, before clashing with Senegal on November 18 at the Mardan Stadium.

While the squad includes established regulars and promising new talent, for Ovella, this call-up marks a significant return after nearly five years away from the national setup.
Having debuted for Harambee Stars in 2016 and scoring in a 2-1 victory over New Zealand, the former Kariobangi Sharks player last earned a cap in 2020 during matches against Uganda and DR Congo.
Ovella Ochieng grateful to be recalled to the Harambee Stars squad
After being out of the national team picture since then, he has now been recalled by McCarthy. Ovella stated this is a reward for his persistent hard work and expressed gratitude toward the coach.
I’m happy to be called back to the national team; this is something I have been working tirelessly toward. I have been out for a while, but I thank God for another opportunity and also the coach for recognizing my potential,” Ovella told SportPesa Blog.

The 25-year-old, who previously represented Kenya at the U20 level in Africa Nations qualifiers, has been in good form this season at the club level.
His pivotal role in helping Nairobi United reach a historic CAF Confederation Cup group stage was, he revealed, a major factor in his selection.

He also believes his consistent performances in the domestic SportPesa League have contributed to his recall. His club, NaiBois, currently sits third on the table with 12 points in their debut season.
I think my performances in the CAF Confederation Cup matches, both home and away, were really strong. I worked hard alongside my teammates to secure our ticket to the group stages.
In the SportPesa League, I’ve also been active, contributing assists, and I believe that’s what the coach noticed. I hope to now play well if given the opportunity on the field and represent my country,” Ovella explained.
Ovella feels comfortable at Nairobi United
Meanwhile, Ovella attributes his resurgence to a positive season after departing his former club, AFC Leopards. He admits he struggled to find his form last season with Ingwe but now feels settled and motivated to prove his worth.
“I feel truly comfortable at Nairobi United since my arrival this season. I was really hampered by injuries at AFC Leopards last season, but right now I’m fully fit. When I’m fit, I believe everything else falls into place.”
These friendly matches will provide the Stars with a vital opportunity to gauge their strength against high-ranking opponents, refine their tactical approach, and build team cohesion ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.
