Former Gor Mahia captain Kenneth Muguna has opened up on the reasons that led to his departure from the Kenyan giants in 2021, in a move that saw him join Tanzanian Premier League side Azam FC.
Muguna, a highly gifted midfielder known for his vision, composure and leadership, began his top flight journey at Western Stima before sealing a move to Gor Mahia in 2017.
After a short spell with K’Ogalo, Muguna landed a dream move to Europe, joining Albanian Premier League side KF Tirana, a transfer he attributes to former Gor Mahia coach Ze Maria.

“Ze Maria played a big role in that move,” Muguna revealed during an interview with Sporty FM.
“Once he took the helm at the club, he asked them to bring me on board, and that is how I joined them.”
Despite the promise of European football, his stint in Albania lasted only ten months and in August 2018, Muguna made a return to Gor Mahia, signing a three-year deal that marked the start of his second spell with the record Kenyan champions.
Upon his return, he quickly reestablished himself as a vital cog in the team’s midfield, guiding Gor Mahia to consistent domestic success. His leadership on and off the pitch saw him appointed as team captain, a role he embraced with maturity and dedication.
During his second stint, Muguna helped the club lift three league titles and one FKF Cup, achievements that solidified his place among Gor Mahia’s most successful captains. However, after successful seasons, he felt it was time to move on.

“I felt like I could not give Gor Mahia more than I had already done,” Muguna admitted.
“There was nothing new left for me to offer that the club had not already celebrated. We had already won the league three times and in my final season, we were FKF Cup champions.
It was the perfect time to move on and give space for the younger players coming in.”
Muguna later joined Azam FC, where he spent two seasons in the Tanzanian Premier League.
