Shabana FC Official Condemns Unfair Ticket Price Hike Ahead of Ulinzi Clash

Shabana FC official member Stephen Kiama has criticized what he terms as the unfair exploitation of clubs with large fan bases through inflated ticket prices, calling on league organizers and host teams to practice fairness and integrity in matchday ticketing.

Speaking ahead of their upcoming SportPesa League clash against Ulinzi Stars, Kiama, who is the Organising Secretary, expressed disappointment over the announced ticket prices for the Sunday fixture at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

With Regular tickets going for Kshs. 300, VIP Kshs. 1,000, and VVIP Kshs. 2,000 which he described as unreasonable and exploitative.

“I want to address the issue of ticketing in our league,” he said. “When Shabana hosts other teams like AFC Leopards we don’t overprice the tickets.

We respect our visitors and their fans. But when other teams host us, they take advantage of our large fan base and inflate prices to Kshs. 1,000 or even Kshs. 2,000. If we truly want to grow the football industry, we must be fair, reasonable, and respectful.”

He went on to express concern that such practices discourage fans from attending matches, especially those traveling long distances.

“It’s unfair to our fans who travel all the way from Kisii, Magina, or Kenyenya, spending nearly Kshs. 3,000 on transport, only to find that entry tickets cost another Kshs. 1,000. Why should fans be punished for their loyalty?” he questioned.

Kiama has urged clubs to adopt a uniform ticketing rate, similar to that used during national team matches.

“Even when Harambee Stars host matches, the Federation Kenya maintains a flat rate of around Kshs. 200 to attract fans in large numbers. Why then are league clubs inflating prices? What’s the goal ? to chase fans away from stadium?”

He also condemned ticket brokers for exploiting fans, warning that such actions will not be tolerated.

“To the ticket brokers, your days are numbered. Let’s stop playing games. We should consult with the government, Football Kenya Federation, and the clubs involved to ensure fairness. Shabana should not be exploited because of its passionate fan base.”

The issue of inflated ticket prices has become a recurring concern in Kenyan football, with previous complaints arising when defending champions Police FC increased ticket rates when hosting record Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia at Police Sacco Pavilion.
