Murang’a SEAL will welcome Kariobangi Sharks to the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a on Sunday in a crucial bottom-of-the-table SportPesa League clash.

Both sides have endured difficult starts to the campaign, with the hosts winning only 2 of their 10 fixtures so far. Kariobangi Sharks, who sit at rock bottom, have managed just 1 win in their opening 9 matches of the season.

The history between the two teams remains limited, given Murang’a Seal’s recent promotion to the top tier after the COVID-19 period. They have met 4 times, with three encounters ending in draws and one win for Kariobangi Sharks.

That victory came last season at the Dandora Stadium, where goals from Ally Salum, Keith Imbali and Andreas Odhiambo delivered a commanding 3-0 triumph for Sharks.

Murang’a Seal have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, collecting 6 points from their last 4 matches, including victories over KCB and draws against Shabana FC, AFC Leopards and Kakamega Homeboyz.

Sharks will be looking to build on their recent draw against AFC Leopards and generate momentum.

 A blunt Sharks attack

With only seven goals scored this season, Kariobangi Sharks are among the league’s least productive attacking sides, sharing the bottom rank with five other teams, including Bandari and KCB.

In contrast, Murang’a Seal has scored 10 times, a tally exceeded only by Gor Mahia (13), Kakamega Homeboyz (13), and Sofapaka (11). They have demonstrated superior efficiency in attack.

The difference between the two sides is highlighted further in their attacking output. Murang’a Seal have registered 47 touches inside the opposition box compared to Kariobangi Sharks’ 25, an indicator of Seal’s greater presence in dangerous areas.

In chance creation, both sides remain nearly identical, with Murang’a Seal generating 42 chances and Sharks closely behind with 41.

However, the shot volume exposes a significant gap. Seal have accumulated 116 shots this season, while Kariobangi Sharks have managed only 66, a disparity that explains the difference in goal returns. The Shark attack is clearly wanting in terms of quality.

Playing style contrast

Murang’a Seal and Kariobangi Sharks present contrasting styles of play. Murang’a are notably more direct and rely heavily on wing progression, frequently using wide channels to advance.

Sharks, on the other hand, prefer a possession-based structure, building their attacks steadily from the back with emphasis on clean and accurate passing sequences.

It’s no surprise that Seals have a much higher cross-accuracy when compared to Sharks.

This contrast in attacking approach is further reflected in their passing metrics. Murang’a Seal have recorded 409 incomplete passes from 2523 attempts, while Kariobangi Sharks have registered only 272 incomplete passes from 2500 attempts.

The Sharks’ passing accuracy illustrates their neat, controlled, and accurate game when finding teammates.

Key Players

Both teams typically operate in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the double pivot in midfield playing an important role in dictating tempo.

For Murang’a Seal, Michael Owen functions as the box-to-box engine and is key to connecting play. His influence is evident, having attempted 307 passes with 17 being progressive, the second highest in the team behind Lucas Maina’s 22.

Kariobangi Sharks will depend on Humphrey Aroko, who often plays as the attacking midfielder, to disrupt Owen’s rhythm and reduce Seal’s ability to circulate possession comfortably through central areas.

In attack, Mark Vivian Kesa remains a central figure for Kariobangi Sharks with 2 goals from 11 shots, 5 of which have been on target. Aroko follows closely with 2 goals and 1 assist in 5 matches, translating to a 0.8 goal contribution per 90 minutes, marking him as one of the Sharks’ more efficient attacking outlets.

Poor away form meets poor home form

Kariobangi Sharks will, however, be without head coach William Muluya and midfielder Razel Omondi, both of whom are currently on national duty with the Kenya U17 team in Ethiopia.

Murang’a Seal’s inconsistencies have largely been exposed at home, where three of their league defeats have occurred at the SportPesa Arena.

Kariobangi Sharks face a more complicated situation. Their only win of the season came away to Mathare United in a 2-1 victory powered by a brace from Mark Vivian Kesa.

That result stands out as their lone bright moment in an otherwise challenging campaign defined by attacking inefficiency, limited shot creation, and difficulty converting possession into threat.

Two straight away defeats without scoring leave the Sharks staring at an unwanted record, a third consecutive goalless away match, a pattern last witnessed back in 2022.

Both teams are flawed, but Murang’a Seal shows signs of stability through better chance creation, while Kariobangi Sharks lack penetration despite controlling possession.
