Football fans are in for a treat on Wednesday, October 29 as two SportPesa League giants in Shabana FC and AFC Leopards lock horns in the sixth round of the 2025/26 season.

Shabana will host this first leg at the Gusii Stadium with the match set to kick off at 2:00 PM EAT.

This will mark Shabana’s fourth home match this season, and things have not been looking good for them on their own turf.

Despite collecting a significant amount in gate collections, the Glamour Boys have suffered back-to-back losses at home.

Their opener was impressive as they thumped newcomers APS Bomet 4-2, before travelling to Mombasa where they snatched all three points from Bandari FC in a 0-1 win.

However, their fortunes changed when injuries hit the squad. During their third match of the season against Tusker, they were held to a 1-1 draw at Kasarani Stadium.

Then the consecutive home losses followed. First, they hosted Posta Rangers, now led by their former coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo, who returned to haunt them with a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Last weekend, the injured Tore Bobe side welcomed Mathare United, and again, it was a former player, Dennis Okoth, who scored for the Slum Boys, extending Shabana’s woes.

Still, these results mirror their rocky starts in previous campaigns since their promotion to the topflight in 2023 after winning the National Super League.

In their debut season, they had only three points after five games (three draws and two losses), and the following season unfolded similarly.

Yet, Peter Okidi’s men appear more refined this term, and a win on Wednesday could significantly lift their morale, despite several key players remaining sidelined with injuries.

However, it will be a tall order for the Kisii-based club, who will have to grind it out against an opponent yet to lose a match this season.

AFC Leopards are arriving with the intention of taking nothing less than three points, having finally gotten off the hook over the weekend.

They secured their first victory of the season by beating KCB 2-1 at the Ulinzi Complex.

Therefore, the under-pressure Fred Ambani will be pushing his boys for a second straight win to find their rhythm in the SportPesa League. They started the season poorly with three consecutive draws, leaving them in eighth place with six points.

As they now seek a second consecutive win against Shabana, Leopards coach Fred Ambani admitted after the KCB match that securing that first victory wasn’t easy due to immense pressure, but he hopes things will fall into place after the win.

The players executed the tactics perfectly. It hasn’t been easy trying to get the first win. There has been pressure on the technical bench and the players,” Ambani said.

On the three consecutive draws and finally getting a win, Ambani said, “We have been drawing and asking ourselves where the problem is, and that’s why we came with the mentality that we have to win this one, and fortunately, it has worked.”

Meanwhile, Shabana FC captain George Onyango told the SportPesa Blog that he is confident the team will win on Wednesday, based on his assessment of the mood at the training camp, despite his own absence.

The past three matches have not been good for us, but as a unit, we are working hard to ensure we overcome our challenges. We will fight to get back to our winning ways, and the preparations at the training camp are going very well,” Shabana captain George ‘Dizo’ Onyango said.

He added, “Despite my own absence, judging by the boys’ commitment in camp, they are ready to face AFC Leopards. I am confident we will win that match.”

Along with missing Dizo, Shabana will also continue to be without the services of their creative striker, Brian Michora, who is sidelined for almost two months.

These two sides have met only five times in competitive tournaments since Shabana got promoted in 2023.

Four of those clashes were in the SportPesa League, while they have met once in the FKF Cup.

Ingwe have won just once, and they have never beaten Shabana in a SportPesa League match; Shabana has won twice, with the other two matches ending in draws.

Ingwe’s sole victory came in the FKF Cup round of 16, 2024, where Kayci Odhiambo’s solo goal at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu saw them advance to the quarterfinals.

The two most recently met in Mombasa during the ODM @20 tournament, where Shabana won 1-0 in the third place playoffs.
