Gor Mahia players have joined millions of Kenyans in mourning the passing of former Prime Minister and long-serving club patron Raila Odinga who passed away on Wednesday, 15 October 2025 while receiving medical treatment in India.
The players described Odinga as a father figure, a pillar of inspiration, and a true supporter of the club’s legacy and Kenyan football at large.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno expressed deep sorrow at the loss, recalling the late patron’s unwavering support and generosity toward the club.

“It is a sad day for us as the Gor Mahia family. We didn’t see it coming because he is one person we respect a lot. He has been our patron for years, and we love him as Gor Mahia.
It’s a sad day, a sad moment for us as a team, we lack words. I have been in the club for the longest time and I must say that during my time till now, the patron has done a lot for this great team.
That’s why he remains the enigma. Personally, my love for Baba was on another level because of his generosity and what he has done for this great club. I would wish that as a team and as Gor Mahia, we give Baba a decent send-off.”
Long-serving midfielder Ernest Wendo also shared his condolences, describing Raila as a national hero whose impact extended far beyond football.

“I send my condolences to the family of our patron. It’s a big loss to the Gor Mahia fraternity and the nation. We’ve lost a hero who will take us ages to forget. Our patron Raila Odinga did great things for both the country and the club, and we thank him for his service and leadership.”
Midfielder Lawrence Juma echoed similar sentiments, describing the late leader as a father figure to players and fans alike.
“It is indeed sad news. All we can say is sorry to the family and the entire country. It’s a big loss to us because he has been a father figure and was always there to support us through everything. My heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time.”
