SportPesa League Round 2 Talking Points: Gor off the mark, Shabana & Posta shine as Tusker continue to stagger
  • Matchweek Two of the 2025/26 SportPesa League featured a total of seven matches.
  • AFC Leopards, Bidco United, Nairobi United, and Kenya Police were absent from the fixture list due to various scheduling and continental commitments.
  • Gor Mahia grabbed the headlines by securing their first win of the season under new head coach Charles Akonnor, while Tusker FC suffered their second consecutive defeat.

The 2025/26 SportPesa League season is gathering momentum, and Matchweek Two did not disappoint, serving up a thrilling mix of drama, goals and talking points across various venues nationwide.

A total of seven matches unfolded, headlined by a Wednesday curtain-raiser on September 24 where Ulinzi Stars and Kariobangi Sharks battled to a stalemate at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

This matchweek saw AFC Leopards, Bidco United, Nairobi United and Kenya Police absent from the fixture list.

Ingwe were slated to face NaiBois, who were committed to CAF Confederation Cup duties, while Bidco’s match against Police was postponed due to the latter’s involvement in the CAF Champions League.

Despite these absences, the weekend’s schedule was packed with anticipation and did not disappoint.

The record Kenyan champions, Gor Mahia, dominated the headlines as their new head coach, Charles Akonnor, secured his first victory. Meanwhile, Tusker FC and APS Bomet stumbled once again, and Shabana ensured they remained in the limelight.

Here is a wrap of the Sportpesa League Round 2 action.

Gor Mahia off the mark as new Ghanaian signing strikes twice

Ebenezer Adukwaw in action as Gor Mahia clinch first SportPesa League victory

K’Ogalo’s new era in the SportPesa League and their journey to reclaim the top-flight title began on a sour note with a 1-0 loss to Bidco United in their opener.

However, they redeemed themselves in matchweek two, delivering a crucial 0-2 victory over Sofapaka on Saturday, September 27, at the Dandora Stadium.

New Ghanaian import Ebenezer Adukwaw was the hero, netting both goals and starting his tenure with the 21-time league champions on a spectacular note.

His clinical finishing addresses a key weakness for Gor Mahia, who struggled to find a consistent goal threat throughout the previous campaign.

Furthermore, after a debut loss, new boss Charles Akonnor, former head coach of the Ghanaian national team, finally secured his first three points.

The victory could have been even more emphatic had Austine Odhiambo not missed his attempt from the spot.

Shabana FC make it two in two – This time on the road

Shabana made a massive statement on the opening day, thrashing league newcomers APS Bomet 4-2 at Gusii Stadium.

They carried that momentum into their second fixture, securing a hard-fought 0-1 away victory against Bandari FC at the Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa on Sunday, September 28.

Brian Michira scored the solo goal, taking his personal tally to three for the season and propelling his team to the top of the table with a perfect six points.

The Gusii-based outfit is not just delivering results; they are also showcasing one of the most vibrant and dedicated fan bases in the league.

Their supporters packed the Mbaraki Sports Club, signaling that this season, the club and its faithful are hunting for a silverware.

Sammy “Omollo” Pamzo delivers with Posta Rangers

Posta Rangers and Shabana are the only two teams to maintain a perfect record with two wins from two.

Having survived a relegation scare last season that ended in the playoffs, the Mailmen have entered the new campaign with renewed energy.

They kicked off their season with a massive comeback, beating Mathare United 1-2, and followed it up this past weekend with another 2-1 victory over Tusker FC.

This impressive form sees them sitting comfortably in second place on the log, a promising start for Pamzo’s young squad.

Tusker still struggling to find their rhythm

Alongside APS Bomet, Tusker have failed to secure a single point from their two opening matches.

The brewers began the season with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to KCB, and this past weekend suffered another 2-1 loss to Posta Rangers, despite a goal from Eric Kapaito.

A leaky defense and a failure to capitalize on chances have left them empty-handed, a stark contrast to their form last season when they were title contenders until the final day.

They have a chance for a quick turnaround with a midweek fixture in Matchweek Three, where they will look to bounce back against Mathare United on Wednesday at 3:00 PM at the Kasarani Annex.

The league is truly finding its rhythm as we head into Matchweek Three, with teams now aiming to establish their positions in the fight for the Sportpesa League title and the KSh 15 million prize on offer for the champion.

Sportpesa League 2025/26 Matchweek Two results
