The SporPesa League 2025/26 matchweek two continues on Friday, September 26, with a thrilling fixture as KCB FC and Mathare United lock horns at the Kasarani Annex from 3:00 PM EAT.

The matchweek two commenced with a midweek encounter where Ulinzi Stars were held to a goalless draw at the Ulinzi Sports Complex by Kariobangi Sharks.

The Bankers, playing at home, enter this contest brimming with confidence after kicking off their campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over Tusker last Friday.

The win, secured by a brace from Boniface Omondi, ensured manager Robert Matano began his tenure with a solid three points.

They will be seeking to build on that momentum and bolster their standing with another maximum haul, as they currently occupy fourth place.

Meanwhile, John Kamau’s charges stumbled at the first hurdle of the new Sportpesa League era, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Posta Rangers on Monday.

They had initially taken the lead through Ellie Asiche from the penalty spot, but the Mailmen staged a comeback with Faustin Ojiambo and Trevor Omondi turning the game on its head.

Consequently, the Slum Boys will be eager to bounce back as they pursue their first win of the season.

SportPesa League: Mathare United wary of KCB threat

Speaking ahead of the match, John Kamau talked up the clash and anticipates a direct approach from the Bankers, a side he believes has already gelled following an extensive pre-season.

“We are going up against a team that did not break. A team that ended the last campaign and almost immediately started their preps for this season.

They even went abroad for a week or so, so that shows you we are going to face a team that has gelled well. This was evident in the last round. We therefore have to be on top of our game mentally to be able to conquer them,” he told the club media.

Simultaneously, the coach refrained from labeling the match a “must-win,” emphasizing that his squad is one of the teams still building gradually, unlike others such as KCB who have started strongly.

“I can’t say that this is a must-win match, as that will be putting unnecessary pressure on the players. We need to understand that this (the league) is a marathon. Some teams will come into the season on a high, while others will gradually improve as the campaign progresses. Case in point, last season.”

Friday’s match will be the 25th top-flight meeting between Mathare United and KCB FC since 2009. The Bankers hold the historical advantage with 11 victories to Mathare’s six.

However, last season Mathare remained unbeaten in this fixture, collecting four points, including a 1-0 win at the Dandora Stadium that ended an eight-game winless streak against their upcoming opponents.
