  • No Kenyan finished inside the top three positions in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Two-time Olympic Games champion Eliud Kipchoge has finished ninth in the 2025 Sydney Marathon. Kipchoge, who was making his debut in Sydney, struggled in a race where Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands shone. No Kenyan managed to finish inside the podium positions in the men’s and women’s categories.

Kiros, who was one of the dark horses in the competitive race, won the TCS Sydney Marathon title in a time of 2:06.06.

The time that he achieved at the road race, which is now part of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, was a few seconds faster than the previous course record of 2:06:18 that was set by Kenya’s Brimin Kipkorir in 2024.

The second and third position went to Addisu Gobena and Tabello Ramakongoana, who clocked 2:06.16 and 2:06:07 respectively.

Kipchoge settles for the ninth position in Sydney Marathon

Meanwhile, Kipchoge, a former world record holder, settled for the ninth position. This is one of the worst performances of his impressive career.

The multiple BMW Berlin Marathon and London Marathon champion crossed the finishing line at 2:08:31.

Sensational Hassan wins the 2025 Sydney Marathon elite women’s title

Elsewhere, Hassan produced a thrilling performance to emerge victorious in the women’s category that had many talented runners.

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games champion cut the tape at 2:18.22 to set a new course record.

Sydney Marathon 2025.

Brigid Kosgei, who held the marathon world record between 2019 and 2023, clocked 2:18.56 to finish second, beating Workenesh Edesa (2:22.15) in the process.

The fourth, fifth and sixth positions went to Sichala Kumeshi, Evaline Chirchir and Ai Hosoda who completed the race in 2:22:50, 2:23.13 and 2:23:27 in that order.
