After a month of thrilling play and spectacular displays, the curtains fell on the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 edition this Saturday, August 30, as Morocco edged Madagascar 3-2 in a gripping final staged at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The tournament, which kicked off on August 2nd, attracted 19 nations from across the African continent.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe dubbed this 16th edition, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, the most successful in recent years.

Indeed, it lived up to the hype. Records were shattered, history was rewritten, and new milestones were achieved.

Kenya, making its debut appearance as host, defied expectations by reaching the quarterfinals.

Similarly, Uganda and Tanzania, despite their limited prior showings, advanced to the last eight for the first time in their histories, cementing the tournament’s legacy as a landmark event.

Morocco wins a historic third CHAN title

The Atlas Lions entered the tournament as clear favorites and lived up to that billing.

They triumphed against a stubborn Madagascar side in front of 45,028 Kenyans who packed Kasarani Stadium, largely rallying behind the Moroccan team.

Bolstered by fan support, goals from Oussama Lamlioui and a brilliant solo effort from Youssef Mehri secured their record-breaking third title, cementing their status as the most successful team in CHAN history.

As champions, Morocco received a prize of $3,500,000 (approx. Ksh. 452,200,000) from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Madagascar reaches maiden final but falls short

Despite not clinching the ultimate prize, Madagascar had a phenomenal run in only their second-ever CHAN appearance.

They were fiercely determined in the final, initially drawing first blood through a goal from Calvin Felicite.

Although Morocco surged ahead to a 2-1 lead, Toky Rakotondraibe managed to equalize.

Their hopes were ultimately dashed by a stunning late strike from Oussama Lamlioui that beat custodian Michel Toldo.

Reaching the final was a historic achievement, not only as a first for the nation but also as the first island nation to ever achieve this feat.

As silver medalists, Madagascar also pocketed $1,200,000 (approx. Ksh. 155,040,000) in prize money.

Senegal, the 2022 champions, finish third and win Fair Play Award

While unable to defend their title, the Teranga Lions were accoladed with the Fair Play trophy for their exemplary discipline, respect, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

This award, which transcends results, recognized Senegal’s impeccable conduct on and off the pitch, noting their low disciplinary tally which included no direct red cards.

In addition to this honour, they took home $700,000 (approx. Ksh. 90,440,000) for their third-place finish.

Player of the Tournament: Morocco’s Mohamed Rabie Hrimat

The Atlas Lions’ captain was the engine of his side’s campaign from the group stage to the decider.

He scored twice, provided two assists, and offered consistent leadership in midfield, guiding his team to their third successful title.

Puma Top Scorer CHAN 2024: Morocco’s Oussama Lamlioui

The RS Berkane player secured the top scorer accolade after netting his fifth and sixth goals of the tournament in the final against Madagascar.

His decisive brace secured the title and set him apart in the scoring race, finishing ahead of South Africa’s Thabiso Kutumela, Uganda’s Allan Okello, and Algeria’s Soufiane Bayazid, who each scored three times.

Best Goalkeeper: Senegal’s Marc Diouf

The 26-year-old Teungueth FC shot-stopper delivered a series of commanding performances, combining lightning reflexes with calm leadership and composure under pressure.

His crowning moment was a crucial penalty save in the third-place play-off against Sudan.
