The Kenya men’s national football team, Harambee Stars, finished Group A of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 unbeaten after a commanding 1-0 victory over Zambia in their final pool match held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday.
A brilliant second-half goal from Ryan Ogam secured the win and ensured that Benni McCarthy’s side topped the so-called Group of Death with 10 points.
Two-time champions Morocco finished second with nine points, while fellow two-time champions DR Congo were eliminated after finishing third with six points.
Angola followed with five, and Zambia exited the tournament without registering a single victory.
As the result, the Harambee Stars’ dominant group-stage display has silenced doubters, proving the depth of talent in the local league.

Zambia vs Kenya CHAN 2024: Harambee Stars player ratings
Faruk Shikalo 7/10
Making his tournament debut in place of the impressive Bryne Omondi, Shikalo looked jittery in the opening moments but gradually settled into the match.
He was largely untested, with Zambia posing minimal threats. His most crucial moment came late in the match when he pulled off a vital save from Kelvin Kapamba’s dangerous effort.
Aboud Omar 7/10
After being benched against Morocco, the left-back returned with a statement performance.
He surged forward with intent, testing Zambia’s backline and even managing a solid shot on target that narrowly missed.
His leadership on the field was also evident as he continued to command respect in his captaincy role.

Lewis Esambe Bandi 8/10
Fresh off an excellent display against Morocco, Bandi was once again outstanding at right back.
His overlapping runs, timely interceptions, and intelligent ball distribution and particularly to Alpha Onyango added value both defensively and offensively.
Mike Kibwage 8/10
In his second start of the tournament, Kibwage showcased composure and strength in the heart of defense.
Tasked with containing Kapamba, he was resolute and authoritative, cementing his status as a reliable central defender.
Sylvester Owino 7/10
A consistent performer throughout the group stage, Owino delivered yet another strong showing.
His awareness, positional discipline, and aerial presence played a crucial role in shutting down Zambia’s limited attacks.
Marvin Nabwire 6/10
Returning from suspension after a red card against Angola, Nabwire was rejuvenated.
Though he made a few minor errors, he brought energy and balance to the midfield, gradually finding his rhythm alongside Onyango.
Alpha Onyango 6/10
His partnership with Nabwire was pivotal. Although his shooting lacked precision, Onyango’s passing, vision, and positioning were vital in maintaining midfield control.
His influence grew as the match progressed.
Austin Odhiambo 6/10
While Odhiambo started brightly, his decision-making in the final third let him down.
Still, his passing accuracy and relentless pressing were notable until he was substituted.

David Sakwa 6/10
Sakwa showed glimpses of improvement, but his crosses and decision-making in the final third need refinement. He was often thwarted by Zambia’s defense on the right wing.
Ben Stanley Omondi 7/10
After a shaky game against Morocco, Omondi bounced back in spectacular fashion.
He terrorized the Zambian left wingf, winning multiple fouls in dangerous areas and delivering pinpoint crosses throughout.
Ryan Ogam 8/10
The hero of the day and the tournament so far.
Ogam once again delivered when it mattered most.
After missing a few earlier chances, he seized the moment with a sublime finish that sealed Kenya’s victory before being substituted.

Boniface Muchiri 9/10
Introduced as a super-sub, Muchiri was the catalyst for Kenya’s winner. His pace, vision, and sublime delivery led to Ogam’s goal, and he nearly added another assist with a cross that Masoud Juma almost converted. A game-changing impact.
Masoud Juma 6/10
Juma injected urgency into the attack after coming on. He created space, got into good positions, and was unfortunate not to score, with Kalumba denying him several times.
Felix Olouch 5/10
Making his tournament debut, Olouch appeared understandably nervous. With more experience, his confidence should grow.
Manzur Okwaro 6/10
Okwaro made a brief appearance but remained composed, making crucial clearances to protect Kenya’s narrow lead.
Daniel Sakari 6/10
Like Okwaro, Sakari contributed defensively in the final minutes, helping Kenya hold on to their clean sheet.
Kenya will now face Madagascar in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 22, at the Moi International Sports Centre.
