  • Ryan Ogam fires Kenya past Zambia to top Group A, helping the Harambee Stars secure home advantage to host Madagascar in the quarterfinals.
  • The match between Kenya and Zambia ended 1-0 in favor of Kenya at Kasarani Stadium.
  • The Kenya vs Madagascar quarterfinal is scheduled for Friday, August 22, and will be played at Moi International Sports Centre.

Ryan Ogam was the hero of the afternoon, striking decisively to power Kenya to a hard-fought 1-0 victory on Sunday, a result that ensured they topped Group A at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and earned the right to host Madagascar at home in the quarterfinals.

Kenya had already secured qualification prior to the match, but the win was crucial in giving them the advantage of home support in the next round.

As a result, both Kenya and Morocco have advanced from Group A.

Morocco, who defeated DR Congo 3-1 to finish second in Group A with nine points, will now travel to Tanzania to face the Taifa Stars in their quarterfinal clash.

In a vibrant and rain-soaked Moi International Sports Centre, Kenya’s first real opportunity came in the 10th minute.

A precise cross from Austin Odhiambo was nearly turned in by Ogam, but the Zambian defense narrowly intercepted the attempt.

Just three minutes later, Odhiambo came close to opening the scoring with a stunning free-kick, only to be denied by Zambia’s exceptional goalkeeper, Charles Kalumba, who once again saved his side from early punishment.

Kenya continued to apply pressure, with a fluid attacking move that saw David Sakwa thread a clever pass to Odhiambo, who tried to set up Ogam.

However, a flurry of short passes inside the box allowed Zambia’s resolute defense to regain control.

The Harambee Stars remained relentless throughout the first half.

Sakwa, Ogam, and Odhiambo spearheaded several dangerous advances, while Aboud Omar and Ben Stanley impressed with their overall contribution.

Still, after 45 minutes of high-intensity football, the teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

Second half: Muchiri inspires, Ogam delivers

Kenya resumed the second half with the same attacking intent.

Just seven minutes in, Alpha Onyango launched a fierce effort on goal, but Kalumba once again showcased his sharp reflexes to maintain parity.

Head coach Benni McCarthy made his first tactical changes, introducing Boniface Muchiri for David Sakwa and Masoud Juma for Austin Odhiambo. Juma nearly made an instant impact, rising to meet a pinpoint cross from Stanley with a powerful header, but Kalumba, yet again stood firm.

Muchiri brought renewed energy and vision to Kenya’s midfield.

His deliveries created multiple scoring opportunities, with one particularly dangerous cross nearly converted by Juma, only for the Zambian defense to hold firm.

The breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute of the game.

Amid pouring rain in Kasarani, Muchiri delivered a superb assist that Ogam coolly slotted home his second goal of the tournament.

He was later substituted for Manzur Okwaro as Kenya looked to secure their lead.

Zambia’s Kelvin Kampamba almost equalized with a thunderous strike from outside the box, but Kenyan keeper Faruk Shikhalo made a composed save, his first real test of the match.

Kenya had two more golden chances to extend their lead through Marvin Nabwire, but Kalumba continued his exceptional form, denying both attempts and preserving Zambia’s hope.

Despite the narrow margin, Kenya dominated proceedings and deservedly secured their place in the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals.

In addition to the win, the team has received a bonus of KSh 2.5 million from President William Ruto, a reward he had pledged if they managed to win the match.

Kenya will now face Madagascar in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 22, at the Moi International Sports Centre.
