Austine Odhiambo played an influential role on Thursday, August 7, 2025 as he led the Kenya football team, Harambee Stars, to a draw against Angola in an intriguing African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 match played at the Kasarani Stadium.

Odhiambo scored a first half penalty that ensured the 10-man Harambee Stars secured a vital point that propelled them to the top of Group A.

The two sides started the match strongly with Angola causing Harambee Stars, who enjoyed the support of thousands of their fans, a lot of problems.

The pressure from the Sable Antelopes players eventually paid in the early stages of the first half following a lack of concentration from the Harambee Stars defenders.

Joaquim Paciência made Harambee Stars players pay for their mistake in the seventh minute when he fired a low shot past Bryne Omondi.

The goal silenced the Kenyan soccer fans, who had turned up in large numbers to support their beloved team.

However, it only took five minutes before the dependable Austin Odhiambo drew the two nations level.

Odhiambo, who also kissed the net in the opening Group A match against DR Congo, netted a penalty in the 12th minute to bring the scores to 1-1.

The goal helped the Gor Mahia FC midfielder to increase his goal tally to two and in the process climb to the summit of the CHAN 2024 top scorer chart.

The situation became worse for the Kenya soccer players when Marvin Nabwire received a red card in the 21st minute after an error from Omondi forced him to make a foul at the edge of the 18-yard box.

Nonetheless, Harambee Stars were able to stop everything that their rivals threw at them and ended up collecting one crucial point.

The one point was enough to help the Kenya football team jump to the top of the Group A standings with four points from two matches.

Odhiambo, who is slowly becoming a household name in Kenya, told SportPesa Blog during the post-match press conference that he is enjoying football because of the unity that exists in the Harambee Stars camp.

“I think the team is united. That’s why it has been easy for me as a player because we are playing as a team. The togetherness in the team is the most important thing and it is helping me to score goals.

We needed to stay compact in the second half and go for the point because it was so important coming to the next game. So, as for now, we know we need another win for us to progress to the next stage,” he commented.

He also appreciated the love shown to them by the Kenyan fans in the two fixtures that they have played so far.

Kenya national team captain Abud Omar determined to collect three points against Morocco

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars skipper Abud Omar stated that their attention will now shift to the upcoming game against Morocco.

According to the Kenya Police FC left-back, they will do their best to stun the Atlas Lions with the support of the fans.

“I believe if we had finished the game with 11 players, we would have beaten them. But at the end of the day, it is what it is in football, and we are grateful for the one point. Now we have to focus on Sunday. The fans have been absolutely amazing. We thank them so much

All the games that we are going to play, we want three points. So, we are going for the three points in Sunday’s game,” he stated.

After Thursday’s encounter, Harambee Stars will be seeking to end their group campaign on a higher note when they play Morocco and Zambia in their remaining fixtures.

The Benni McCarthy-oached side is scheduled to square it out with the tournament’s favorites Morocco on Sunday, August 10 before completing their group fixtures with a tricky clash against Zambia seven days later.

Should the Kenya football team beat Morocco, they will be in a good position of finishing at the top of Group A that also has DR Congo.
