Harambee Stars, who played for the majority of the game with 10 men, secured a 1-1 draw with the South Africans, a result that ensured they returned to the top of CHAN 2024 Group A.

During the dramatic match that took place at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, the Kenya national football team players displayed great determination after Marvin Nabwire was red carded in the 21st minute to stop the talented Angola side.

Nabwire was dismissed after a VAR check for preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Speaking to SportPesa Blog after the game, McCarthy lauded his players for their bravery against the tricky opponent.

“The attitude and mentality from the players was incredible. Whoever was on the field, you know they did a great job, but I felt it was a missed opportunity for us.

As good as Angola was, I felt with 11 players in the field we could have gotten more than what we did, but we are also happy playing with 10 men to take a point. I am happy with that,” he explained.

Angola were the first to open the scoring in the seventh minute when Jó Paciência fired a shot past Kenya’s goalkeeper Bryne Omondi.

However, it did not take long before the mercurial Austin Odhiambo equalized for the Harambee Stars in the 12th minute.

Odhiambo scored from the spot after he was brought down inside the penalty box by one of the Sable Antelopes players.
