  • President William Ruto has expressed his satisfaction with Kenya’s preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
  • Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, will co-host the continental competition, which is set to kick off on August 2 and run through to August 30, 2025.
  • During his inspection of Kasarani Stadium, the President also visited the national team players training at the Kasarani Annex, where he pledged his full support.

President William Ruto is pleased with Kenya’s progress in preparing for the upcoming 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) this August and has vowed full support for the national team.

Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, will co-host the continental competition, which will kick off on August 2 and run through August 30, 2025.

On Wednesday afternoon, President Ruto, accompanied by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Defence CS Soipan Tuya, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, and other notable dignitaries, toured the newly refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The President commended the high-quality renovations at the stadium, affirming Kenya’s readiness to host the championship.

During his visit, President Ruto engaged with the national team, Harambee Stars, currently in training at the Kasarani Annex, and assured them of the government’s full backing.

We will support you, we will pray for you. We will come here to cheer you, and you can count on our unity. We are on the same page and we will support you,” he declared.

For the first time in the history of Kenya, we are doing this. Let’s win and believe in ourselves, because we have a great nation. I believe we can do it.”

Emphasizing both personal and governmental dedication to the team’s success, Ruto added:

On a personal level, I’m really committed to this. As a government, we are committed as well. We will rally behind you this will unite us as a nation.”

Urging the players to give their all during the tournament, he noted:

“We are going to host CHAN, and you are the ones to represent 55 million Kenyans. That’s the weight of responsibility you carry as a team. I have come here as the President to tell you- we believe in you, we trust in your potential, and we will proudly cheer you on.”

President Ruto also pledged full backing for Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy and his entire technical bench:

Coach, you have our full support. You have our blessings as you lead this team. You and your technical team, we are going to support you, we will work with you, and whatever is required, we are here. Any issue, I’m available to work with everyone.”
