The national men’s football team, Harambee Stars, is set to compete in the CECAFA Four Nations scheduled for 21 to 27 July at Karatu Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania.

The invitational competition will feature hosts Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya alongside Congo Brazzaville, who join as a guest team following the withdrawal of Sudan.

The tournament serves as a crucial warm-up ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

However, the Sudanese Football Federation requested to withdraw in order to focus on their domestic league, which recently resumed. As a result, Congo Brazzaville was drafted in as a replacement.

Auka John Gecheo, Executive Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), highlighted the tournament’s importance in preparation for CHAN.

“The primary objective of this competition is to offer our Zonal teams a valuable platform to prepare adequately ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August 2025,” Gecheo stated.

Harambee Stars will kick off their campaign against traditional rivals Uganda Cranes on July 21, while Tanzania will clash with Congo Brazzaville on the same day.

Matchday Two, set for July 24, will see Congo Brazzaville square off against Uganda, while Tanzania meets Kenya in a high-stakes showdown.

The final round of fixtures on Sunday, July 27, will witness Kenya take on Congo Brazzaville, and Uganda lock horns with Tanzania.

All four participating nations will field squads composed exclusively of home-based players, as CHAN regulations only permit domestic league players.

The championship will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from August 2–30.

Harambee Stars’ head coach, Benni McCarthy, expressed optimism about the tournament’s potential to sharpen his team’s competitive edge.

“It is a perfect opportunity for us to know how fit we are as we prepare for CHAN. All the players now have an opportunity to fight for inclusion in the final squad,” he said.
