- Faith Kipyegon set a new 1500m world record of 3:48.68 at the Prefontaine Classic 2025 that was held on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
- Kipyegon lowered the former world record of 3:49.04 that she set at the Paris Diamond League in 2024.
- The monstrous performance is expected to improve Kipyegon’s confidence ahead of the Tokyo World Athletics Championships where she will be seeking to retain her title.
Multiple Olympic Games champion Faith Kipyegon delivered a stellar performance to break the 1500m world record at the Prefontaine Classic 2025.
Kipyegon switched on the gears in the final lap of the star-studded race and went on to clinch the title in a time of 3:48.68.
The time that Kipyegon clocked in Eugene was faster than the old world record of 3:49.04 that she set at the Paris Diamond League in 2024.

The mother of one was followed by Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji and Australia’s Jessica Hull, who clocked personal and season bests times of 3:51.44 and 3:52.67.
Another Kenyan runner who took part in the race, Susan Lokayo Ejore, settled for the 11th position in a season best time of 3:58.05.
Faith Kipyegon’s training mate Faith Cherotich finishes second in 3000m steeplechase race
Elsewhere, Kenyan runners Faith Cherotich and Mary Moraa finished second and ninth in the 3000m steeplechase and 800m races respectively at the Prefontaine Classic 2025.
Cherotich, who traveled to the Eugene Diamond League with high morale having won the coveted title at both the Oslo and Stockholm meetings, was beaten by Kenyan-born Bahraini runner Winfred Yavi.
Yavi crossed the finishing line in a fast time of 8:45.25, missing the current world record of 8:44.32 that was set by Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech several years ago.
On the other hand, Cherotich registered a new lifetime best of 8:48.71 which was enough to ensure she finishes ahead of Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, who finished in 8:51.77.

Lastly, Kipyegon will shift her attention now to the Tokyo World Athletics 2025 where she is seeking to defend her title.
