  • Beatrice Chebet broke the 5000m world record at the Prefontaine Classic 2025 that was held in Eugene, United States on Saturday.
  • Chebet clocked a time of 3:58.06, making her the only woman to deep under 14:00.00 in the history of 5000m race.
  • Chebet was followed by her compatriot Agnes Ngetich and Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia.

Most people knew that Beatrice Chebet was capable of smashing the 5000m women’s world record, but no one could predict exactly when.

In a display of sheer determination, Chebet made history at the Prefontaine Classic 2025 also known as Eugene Diamond League, running a tactical race to smash the 5000m world record.

Chebet, who won two Olympic Games gold medal for Kenya at the 2024 Paris edition, crossed the finishing line in an impressive time of 13:58.06.

Beatrice Chebet breaks Gudaf Tsegay’s 5000m world record

Her time was a few seconds faster than the previous world record of 14:00.21 that was set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at the same event in 2023.

Chebet, who also holds the 10000m world record, was followed by her compatriot Agnes Ngetich and Tsegay.

Ngetich outpaced Tsegay at the closing stages of the race and went on to clock a new personal best time of 14:01.29.

On the other hand, Tsegay registered a season best time of 14:04.41 in the event that was staged at the iconic Hayward Field, in Eugene, United States.

Since the Prefontaine Classic 2025 was used to select Kenya’s 5000m women’s and 10000m men’s teams for the upcoming Tokyo World Athletics Championships, Chebet and Ngetich will carry represented the East African nation in the event that is planned to be held between September 13 and September 21 in Japan.

On the other side, the Kenyan 10000m to the eagerly awaited championships is made up of Edwin Kurgat, Ishmael Kipkurui and Benson Kiplangat. The trio finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in the race that was held earlier today.

Finally, Chebet will return home as a multiple world record holder on the track, because she now holds both the 10000m and 5000m world records. The later is subject to the verification process by the World Athletics.
