Kenya Police FC defender Brian Okoth has disclosed the key element that propelled his team to secure their first-ever Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) title.

On Sunday, June 15, Police FC clinched the championship with a game to spare after Okoth’s decisive header sealed a crucial win against Shabana FC at Kenyatta Stadium.

This victory crowned them the 2024/25 champions, dethroning Gor Mahia and marking a landmark achievement in the club’s history.

Speaking after the match, Okoth acknowledged the fierce competition throughout the season.

He expressed gratitude to God for their success and dedicated the triumph to both his parents in honor of Father’s Day.

The league has been good with its own challenges, but it has been very competitive. All in all, we thank God for being champions,” Okoth told Tata Sports after the match.

This is my first title in my life. I take this opportunity to dedicate it to my mother and, for Father’s Day, to my dad.”

How Kenya Police FC overcame challenges  to win the league

Kenya Police FC ended a long-standing dominance by Gor Mahia and Tusker, who had shared league supremacy since 2010. This title, however, didn’t come easily.

At the beginning of the season, Police FC endured a rocky start.

They were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup by Egypt’s Zamalek and languished in the relegation zone after the first 10–12 games.

This prompted a major restructuring, with head coach Salim Babu being relieved of his duties. In his place, the management appointed Burundian tactician Etienne Ndayiragije in December 2024.

Since taking over, Ndayiragije has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, winning 17 matches, drawing five, and losing only four during his tenure.

Reflecting on their journey, Okoth emphasized that unity within the squad was the cornerstone of their resurgence.

The season has been very tough with many challenges. We started when we were 18th on the log in our first 10 or 13 games of the league.

After that, we came together as a team, talked things through, and we have won. We’ve stayed at the top for a while.”

One thing that has really helped us this season is that we have stayed together. The brotherhood in the club and talking when there is a problem.”

Kenya Police FC will officially be crowned champions this Sunday when they face former title holders Gor Mahia at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
