Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi produced an electric display to win the 800m race at the Stockholm Diamond League 2025.

Wanyonyi, who was competing in his third Diamond League meeting of the season in Stockholm, displayed tactical brilliance to run away with the coveted title.

Unlike in the Rabat Diamond League where he waited for a long time before making his move, Wanyonyi decided to run from the front in Sweden.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi too hot to handle at Stockholm Diamond League 2025

He produced a brilliant kick in the final stages and went on to cross the finishing line in a world lead time of 1:41.95.

Wanyonyi was followed by 2024 Paris Olympic Games medalist Djamel Sedjati of Algeria and American runner Josh Hoey, who clocked 1:42.27 (season best) and 1:42.43 (personal best).

The other Kenyan representative in the 800m men’s race, Wyclife Kinyamal clocked a slow time of 1:43.95 to finish seventh.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi’s compatriots fail to register podium positions in 3000m women’s race

Elsewhere, the Kenyan duo of Caroline Nyaga and Hellen Lobun Ekalale finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 3000m women’s race which was won by Australia’s Linden Hall.

Hall crossed the finishing line in a personal best time of 8:30.01 to beat Uganda’s Sarah Chelangat.

Chelangat, who was part of the leading pack alongside the likes of Nyaga at some point in the race, clocked a national record time of 8:31.27 to narrowly edge out Great Britain’s Innes Fitzegerald (8:32.90).

The fourth position went to Hannah Nuttall (8:33.82) while Nyaga and Ekalale finished in season best and personal best times of 8:34.79 and 8:36.85.

Finally, Wanyonyi and the rest of the Kenyan runners are expected to shift their focus to the upcoming races after the Stockholm Diamond League showdown.
