  • Sofapaka head coach Ezekiel Akwana has stated that, despite their safety in the FKF Premier League and a guaranteed spot next season, they will approach this match as a final in order to achieve their season objectives.
  • His goal has been to finish in the top eight with a minimum of 45 points.

Sofapaka head coach Ezekiel Akwana has affirmed that his team remains determined to achieve their seasonal objectives, as they set their sights on securing maximum points against Posta Rangers on Sunday, June 15, at Utalii Grounds in Nairobi.

Sofapaka, who have shown impressive form recently, will head into the match brimming with confidence after securing their biggest win of the season – a massive 7-1 triumph over Tusker FC two weeks ago, which shattered the Brewers’ hopes of clinching the league title.

Currently positioned seventh in the standings with 43 points, they will confront a struggling Posta Rangers side who are very close to the relegation zone.

The Mailmen sit 15th with 34 points, just three points above bottom-placed Nairobi City Stars, who have 31.

Speaking to the SportPesa Blog ahead of Sunday’s fixture, Akwana revealed that the squad has been in high spirits following their dominant performance against Tusker.

The camp has really been good since the massive win against Tusker. The players are motivated. When you look at three to four matches prior to this, we played well but were not able to execute properly.

We managed to execute in the Tusker match something we had not been doing in the other games. My boys are fast runners, and they execute my plan well, Akwana stated.

Sofapaka push for top eight finish

Despite their relatively secure position compared to last season, when they were battling relegation, Akwana emphasized that the mission is far from over.

His goal has been to finish in the top eight with a minimum of 45 points.

My target this season was 45 points, and we are at 43 now, so we still have something to fight for to reach that goal. I told my boys the Posta Rangers match is more important than the Tusker game because Rangers will be fighting hard to avoid relegation.

We are not in a bad position, but our target is to finish in the top eight, so we have to end the season on a high note. We’re going to approach this game with even more focus than the Tusker one it’s like another final for us,” he added.

Akwana 48, took charge of Batoto ba Mungu in mid-January and has overseen 17 matches so far.

Under his leadership, the team has recorded five of their ten wins this season, suffered five defeats, and drawn seven times. He remains optimistic about ending the season on a high note.

“On Sunday, we are going for the maximum three points, and in our last match against Bidco United, we also have to finish on a high note. So, we are going to fight for the remaining six points,” Akwana concluded.
