Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Salim Mvurya has affirmed that Kenya is fully prepared to host the highly anticipated Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, confirming that contractors will hand over the keys by June 25.

With less than two months remaining before the tournament kicks off in August, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania, the country is in a race against time to meet all logistical and infrastructural requirements.

Kenya has been focusing on the upgrading of two main stadiums the Nyayo National Stadium, which is nearing completion, and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, which is also in its final stages of refurbishment.

In addition to the main venues, several training facilities have also been under development. Ulinzi Sports Complex has already been declared ready, while the Kenya Police Sacco Grounds are undergoing final enhancements.

Kenya ready to host CHAN 2024

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, June 10, after inspecting Kasarani Stadium and other facilities, CS Mvurya expressed confidence in Kenya’s readiness, not only for CHAN 2024 but also for AFCON 2027, which the country is set to co-host.

“This tour today is part of the assessment of Kenya’s readiness, and I want to confirm to all Kenyans that we are ready to host CHAN. In fact, we are ready to host AFCON 2027,” Mvurya told the press on Tuesday.

He further stated that agreements have been reached with stadium contractors to officially hand over the facilities by June 25, ahead of the tournament scheduled for August 2–30.

We have agreed with all the contractors from this field and all other venues and training grounds, including Police Sacco, Kasarani and Nyayo, that they will be handing over the keys on the 25th of this month (June),” he added.

Mvurya also addressed the ongoing construction of the perimeter wall at Nyayo Stadium, noting that it is 60% complete and part of broader efforts to enhance stadium security.

“The wall we are constructing at Nyayo is part of the recommendations to strengthen security. Beyond the wall, which is 60% complete, we will also install CCTV systems so that they can properly link with the internal security system,” he said.

Regarding logistics for the tournament, he provided updates on the Pamoja Visa initiative, a collaborative effort between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to ease travel for players and fans.

We have already held meetings with ministers from our partner nations in the Pamoja initiative, and we’re engaging immigration departments to streamline the visa process for tournament participants and spectators,” he stated.

With just a few finishing touches remaining, Kenya is working diligently to ensure that all facilities meet the standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), aiming to deliver a successful and memorable tournament.
