Gor Mahia FC shot stopper Gad Mathews has described the eagerly awaited Mashemeji Derby as a “must win” for his side.

With the crunch fixture set to be played for the first time ever at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County on Monday, June 2, 2025, Mathews has emphasized that Gor Mahia must collect all the three points to stand a chance of defending their Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.

As stated by Mathews, anything less than a win against their arch-rivals AFC Leopards would be detrimental to their title aspirations.

“It’s not going to be an easy match. Being that we are playing on home soil, the fans will turn out in large numbers. We are very grateful for what they have been doing in the past. This derby is a must win for us players.

We must win. We don’t have any excuse because we must win the rest of our matches. We must win the three remaining matches,” explained the 29-year-old.

Mathews is expected to start between the posts for the hosts who occupy the third position in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League standings at the moment with 54, seven less than leaders Kenya Police FC. The latter have played one more game.

His experience will come in handy for Gor Mahia, who recently parted ways with Croatian coach Sinisa Mihic.

Meanwhile, Mathews’ teammate Alphonce Omija has urged K’Ogalo supporters from all corners of the country to travel to Homa Bay and give them a push.

Omija, who was included in the recently named Harambee Stars squad that is set to play two friendly matches against Chad on June 7 and June 10, vowed that they will do everything possible to win the tough tie.
