The 2025 Kip Keino Classic has lived to the expectations that many stakeholders had placed on it.

From inspiring victories to shocking upsets, the Kip Keino Classic had all the drama that is usually witnessed in World Athletics Continental Gold Tour events across the globe.

While familiar stars Lilian Odira, Ethan Katzberg, and Edmund Serem triumphed in their respective disciplines, one of the most-talked about outcomes of the day was Julius Yego’s performance.

Julius Yego attains season best throw at Kip Keino Classic 2025

Yego, who won an historic gold medal for Kenya in the 2015 Beijing World Championships, finished outside the podium positions much to the disappointment of the home fans who had turned up in large numbers to support him.

Kip Keino Classic 2025

The National Police Service (NPS) athlete settled for the fifth position after achieving a season best throw of 78.74 in the event that was won by Brazil’s Luiz Maurício Dias da Silva 86.34.

The second, third, and fourth positions went to Thomas Rohler (80.79), Leandro Ramos (80.68) and Curtis Thompson (78.78) respectively.

Elsewhere, the Kenyan duo of Odira and Sarah Moraa finished first and third in that order in the 800m race.

The former crossed the finishing line in 1.58.31 to beat Botswana’s Oratile Nowe. Nowe clocked 1:58.47 ahead of Moraa, who stopped the clock at 1:58.96.

Odira, who was part of the Kenya team that took part in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, could not hide her excitement after the race.

“This was my 800m season opener, and I wasn’t expecting to get a PB (Personal Best). I was just coming to gauge the body. But, I am so thankful, I have got another PB here. Yeah, and it will push and motivate me,” she stated.

The brilliant performances from Odira and Moraa ensured they qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
