Why did Sasha Mutai resign as KRU Chairman?
Sasha Mutai’s departure was unexpected. However, he expressed that the decision was driven by intense internal pressure, and he chose to step aside to preserve his personal integrity.
So, there was an SGM, and some members were looking to eject me as chairman of Kenya Rugby Union because of some allegations of dictatorship and the rest.
I read the mood in the room, and I have decided to tender my resignation today as chairman of Kenya Rugby Union because of certain things that I cannot compromise such as my integrity.
I love this game, I have done a lot for it before as director, vice chairman and now for the two years that I have had the opportunity of being the chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union, brought back quite a number of sponsors, got the Kenya Sevens team to where it should be and basically looking out for the player,” Sasha Mutai said during his resignation address.”
While addressing attendees at the SGM, Mutai cited ethical concerns within the board as a key motivator for his resignation.
He alleged that some members had submitted forged Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) clearance certificates during vetting, while others refused to step down after exceeding their term limits.
““Unfortunately, members of my board have questions of integrity. I had three board members who adduced three forged CRB certificates and two members who refused to vacate office,” he stated.
