Emmanuel Wanyonyi failed to meet the expectations that many Kenyans had placed on him at the 2025 Rabat Diamond League.

Wanyonyi, who was the favorite to win the 800m title at the Rabat Diamond League, struggled to keep up with the pace of two of his opponents to settle for the third position.

Wanyonyi, a former winner at the Rabat Diamond League, crossed the finishing line in a season best time of 1:43.37.

Tshepiso Masalela beats Wanyonyi at 2025 Rabat Diamond League

The race was won by Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela, who clocked a national record time of 1:42.70 to beat Great Britain’s Max Burgin. The latter registered a lifetime best of 1:43.34.

The win was a special one for Masalela because he was also celebrating his 26th birthday.

In another discipline, South Africa’s Akani Simbine ran away with the 100m title in a field that had the likes of Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo.

Akani, who has won a couple of Diamond League meetings since the start of the season, triumphed in a time of 9.95 seconds.

He was followed by his African rival Omanyala, who stopped the stopwatch at 10.05 seconds to finish ahead of United States’ athlete Fred Kerley. Kerley managed a time of 10.07 seconds.

Nelly Chepchirchir bags 1500m crown at 2025 Rabat Diamond League

Elsewhere, Kenyan runner Nelly Chepchirchir continued with her impressive start to the season when she overcame a deep field to win the 1500m title in 3:58.04.

Chepchirchir, who recently escaped with the same title in the Doha Diamond League, was followed by Worknesh Musele and Dorcas Ewoi.

2025 Rabat Diamond League.

Musele clocked 3:58.44 while the highly-rated Kenyan Ewoi crossed the finishing line 3:59.25.

The next stop for Kenyan runners and their opponents after the Rabat Diamond League is the 2025 Rome Diamond League that will be held on June 6 in Italy.
