Douglas Koech delivered a heartbreaking blow to Gor Mahia, netting a dramatic late equalizer to deny them the chance to climb to the top of the FKF-PL 24/25 table in a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at the Dandora Stadium.

Gor Mahia believed they had secured all three points after Joshua Onyango broke the deadlock with a second-half header.

However, in a tense 90th-minute twist, Sofapaka capitalized on a lapse in Gor’s defense, leveling the score and preserving a point.

The result means Gor remains third with 47 points, trailing Kenya Police (49 points), while Tusker FC (48 points) are poised to face Nairobi City Stars on Sunday.

With a game in hand, head coach Sinisa Mihic side knew that only a victory would suffice.

K’Ogalo almost got off to a dream start just a minute into the match, when Austine Odhiambo came close to giving the visitors the lead, only for Edward Oluk to produce a superb save and keep the scores level.

As the game approached the quarter-hour mark, Sofapaka had yet to mount a meaningful threat, while Gor squandered several promising opportunities.

Sofapaka’s first real chance came around the 30th  minute when Rodgers Kipkemoi surged down the left flank and whipped in a dangerous cross.

Bramwel Simiyu met it with a powerful strike that was deflected, rebounding to Kipkemoi, whose follow-up attempt was again thwarted by solid defending from Alphonce Omija.

Just before halftime, Benson Omalla found the net, but his effort was disallowed for offside, following a flurry of headed attempts that failed to breach the defense.

The first half ended in a goalless draw, with Gor Mahia dominating possession, while Sofapaka were left to rue their missed opportunity.

Gor Mahia’s breakthrough and late heartbreak

The second half began with Gor Mahia’s assistant coach, Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno, introducing Levin Odhiambo for Bryton Onyona to inject pace down the left wing.

Echoing the first half, Gor created an early chance from a cross on the right wing, but Oluk remained resolute between the posts.

Seven minutes later, Austine Odhiambo showcased his set-piece prowess, curling in a brilliant free-kick that forced another fine save from Oluk, who tipped the ball out for a corner.

Benson Omalla thought he had finally put Gor ahead with a header from Sherrif Musa’s cross, but the goal was once again ruled offside.

Sofapaka’s head coach Ezekiel Akwana respondeds with tactical substitutions, bringing on Japheth Mzungu and Maqbul for Wayne Otieno and Bramwel Simiyu, respectively.

In the 67th minute, Gor Mahia’s persistence paid off.

Joshua Onyango rose highest to nod in a pinpoint delivery from Odhiambo’s free-kick, giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Zico followed up with another double substitution, replacing Benson Omalla with Samuel Kapen and Samuel Onyango with Paul Ochuoga, as Gor aimed to solidify their lead.

They held firm until the dying moments of the match. Then came the heartbreak. Edward Omondi, who had been relatively quiet, sparked a late attack with deft movement in the box.

Douglas Koech capitalized, smashing home the equalizer in the 90th minute to snatch a point and left hopeful Gor Mahia frustrated.

The game ended 1-1, with both teams sharing the spoils in a fiercely contested clash.
