Top-rated Harambee Stars defender Rooney Onyango has shared an emotional goodbye message after signing for Norwegian second-tier club Sogndal Fotball.

Onyango, who was part of the Harambee Stars squad that played against Gabon in the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, completed the move after convincing Sogndal Fotball’s officials during a one-month trial.

He joins another Kenyan player Alfred Scriven in Norway, who plays for Bryne FK, a club that takes part in the Norwegian topflight.

In his farewell message, Onyango thanked the Gor Mahia stakeholders, particularly fans for the love that they have shown him.

“Saying goodbye is never easy but I leave with a heart full of gratitude. Together, we lifted the FKFPL title, the Charity Shield Cup and made memories I will cherish forever.

To the fans, thank you for your unwavering support. Your passion made every match special. To my teammates, my brothers, keep pushing and making history. To the coaches and staff your hard work made all this possible and I’m forever grateful,” read part of his statement.

Onyango wishes Gor Mahia success in Mashemeji Derby

The 23-year-old also took the opportunity to wish Gor Mahia success in their upcoming Mashemeji Derby clash against arch-rivals AFC Leopards.

“As I start a new chapter, I will always be a fan. Wishing you all the best, especially in the Mashemeji Derby. Boys, go out there and make us proud,” he wrote.

Gor Mahia, who are the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) defending champions, are set to lock horns with Ingwe in a crunch fixture that is scheduled to go down at the Nyayo National Stadium from 4 PM on Sunday.

Besides Gor Mahia, Onyango, who was born in Thika, has also had a stint with Wazito FC and Gusii United.
