“Ni Hao China, Faith Kipyegon here. I will be running in the Xiamen Diamond League on 26th of April. See you there,” she stated.
The 32-year-old is expected to feature in the 1000m discipline as she seeks to build up momentum ahead of the upcoming 2025 World Athletics Championship that is scheduled to take place in Tokyo, Japan in September.
In addition, Kipyegon will give her best in the race since a victory in Xiamen will help her make history.
According to the organizers, the mother of one will match the record that is currently held by Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic.
“Faith Kipyegon will begin her campaign for a record-equalling sixth Diamond League title when she lines up in the women’s 1000m at the season opener in Xiamen, China on April 26. Kenya legend Kipyegon has dominated the distance events in recent years, claiming her fifth Diamond Trophy at the series final in Brussels last September.
She now needs just one more series title to equal Sandra Elkasevic’s record and become the joint most successful female athlete in Diamond League history,” read part of the statement from the Wanda Diamond League website.

Kipyegon travels to Xiamen with a personal best of 2:29.15 over the distance, which is very close to the current world record of 2:28:98 that was set by Russia’s Svetlana Masterkova in 1996.
Should the multiple world champion break Masterkova’s world record, she will cement her legacy as one of the greatest female runners of all time.

Besides Kipyegon, Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo is another big name that has been confirmed for Xiamen Diamond League.
The reigning 200m Olympic champion will start his season in Xiamen before heading to Shanghai Diamond League which is planned for May. Tebogo will compete in the 100m race in both series.
