The four- preparing for the 2026 WAFCON qualifier in Côte d'Ivoire in Dandora

Kenya’s referee quartet—Josephine Wanjiku, Caroline Kiles, Elizabeth Njoroge, and Lucy Juma, have been selected to officiate the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier between Chad and Senegal on February 21, 2025, in Côte d’Ivoire.

In preparation for the international assignment, the four officials honed their skills on Friday evening, officiating the Football Kenya Federation Premier League match between Kariobangi Sharks FC and Posta Rangers FC at the Dandora Stadium in Nairobi. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw.

Caroline Kiles emphasized the challenges of being recognized for their officiating skills in a male-dominated arena.

She acknowledged the hard work required to break stereotypes and meet their goals and prove people wrong.

“It’s not an easy task, as society is still learning to embrace the idea of women officiating matches. Many believe we are not capable, but we work hard to prove otherwise, ensuring we perform to the best of our ability in every match, big or small.” Kiles shared with FKF Media.

Josephine Wanjiku expressed her ambitions, revealing her aspiration to officiate at the World Cup.

“I began my refereeing journey in 2012, starting in the lower leagues and gradually progressing. Now, as a FIFA referee, my dream is to officiate at the World Cup.”

Elizabeth Njoroge also voiced her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity, echoing Wanjiku’s sentiments.

“Being selected for this match is a great honor. It shows faith in my abilities, and I’m determined to prove myself. My ultimate goal is to officiate at the World Cup.”

This is not the first time Josephine Wanjiku, one of the few Kenya female referees accredited by the world football governing body, has officiated in high-profile matches.

In October 2022, she served as the center referee for the match between Uganda and Ethiopia in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Caroline Kiles also officiated that match, but as the first assistant referee.

Additionally, Josephine Wanjiku was the only Kenyan referee selected to officiate in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The appointment of these four referees reflects the growing recognition of Kenyan match officials on the continental stage, where female representation remains rare.
