  • The draw helped Gor Mahia to jump to position three in the FKFPL standings.

Gor Mahia head coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno is delighted after managing to escape with a point in a difficult match against Kakamega Homeboyz played on Sunday.

Hosts Kakamega Homeboyz thought that they had opened the scoring in the 78th minute when Moses Shummah put the ball into the net, but it was controversially ruled out for offside.

Gor Mahia struggled a lot, especially in front of goal where they failed to create any clear chance in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) tie that was played at the Mumias Sports Complex.

The team’s approach to the game angered many of their fans with most of them putting the blame on their head coach.

However, Otieno, who is expected to manage the defending champions until the end of the 2024/2025 season, stated after the barren draw that he is satisfied to return to Nairobi with a single point.

“I think one point away from home is good. This has always been a difficult pitch. I think we defended well, their threats, which were high balls and then crosses. I think the boys played very well in terms of defending those situations.

So, I think we are just happy for the one point and we look forward to the next game,” commented Otieno.

The former Harambee Stars player added that it is usually difficult for teams playing away matches to get many chances.

The draw helped Gor Mahia to climb to position three in the FKFPL standings with 28 points, eight behind league leaders Kenya Police FC. Nevertheless, K’Ogalo still have a chance to reduce the gap since they have a game in hand.

Francis Baraza laments poor officiating

Unlike Otieno, his Kakamega Homeboyz counterpart Francis Baraza expressed discontent over poor officiating.

“I would first like to thank the almighty God because all the players have come out of the game safely. Although I have seen some confrontations there, I think it involves the referees and the fans.

So, I can’t talk about it a lot because everyone has watched the game, we scored a clean goal It can’t be offside because my striker was onside attacking the ball,” he explained.

The tactician, who has previously had a stint with Dodoma Jiji FC, also commended their opponents for making it hard for them

“Though I congratulate Gor Mahia for giving us a difficult game. I think it has been a great, entertaining game,” ended Baraza.
