Shujaa

The men’s national rugby 7s side, Shujaa, saw all their efforts go down the drain as they succumbed to a second defeat in the ongoing Perth 7s taking place at the HBF Park in Australia following their 14-21 loss to Fiji.

Having tasted a 29-14 defeat against New Zealand in their first match, Shujaa was hoping for a win to harbour any chances of making it at least to the quarterfinals.

However, despite some energetic first half showing that saw the Kevin Wambua-coached side lead 14-7, it was not to be as the double Olympic champions managed to complete the turnaround that saw them secure their first victory in the tournament following their upsetting loss to Uruguay.

Shujaa had made a bright start, racing to a 14-0 lead against the Oceanic giants and looked well on their way to bringing their 13-match losing streak since 2018 to an end.

Nygel Amaitsa opened the scoring for Kenya with a clever kick in behind the Fijian defense that he managed to get to just under the posts for a 7-0 lead following Tony Omondi’s successful conversion.

The diminutive Samuel Asati then showed some game awareness as he collected the ball from the ruck and attacked the outside to extend Kenya’s lead to 14-0 after Omondi nailed the conversion as well.

However, that would mark the end of the road for Kenya as the wheels started slowly coming off.

First, George Ooro had to be forced off after appearing to have picked a shoulder injury.

Fiji then reduced the deficit to 14-7 by the half time break with Joji Nasova crossing the whitewash.

In the second half, a try from Joseva Talacolo and a second from Nasova got the job done as Fiji completed the comeback.

The result left Kenya bottom of Group C on 1 point with Uruguay leading on 6 points following their incredible wins over New Zealand and Fiji.

Shujaa face the Uruguayans in their last Pool match on Saturday at 0700EAT.
