Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) leaders Tusker FC picked up a vital win against title holders Gor Mahia FC on Sunday evening.

This is after they squeezed past Gor Mahia with a narrow 2-1 win thanks to Ryan Ogam’s brilliance in the entertaining clash that was staged at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County.

The two sides began the match slowly with Gor Mahia testing Tusker’s shot stopper Brian Opondo twice from outside the box within the first 15 minutes.

As the game continued, the Brewers were forced to make a substitution shortly after the half hour mark after Mike Odour was involved in a collision. Oduor, who appeared to have suffered a concussion, was replaced by Dennis Wanjala.

Although the two sides had half goal scoring chances, none of them managed to break the deadlock by the half time break.

However, Tusker returned from the break with more energy and they were rewarded with a goal in the 50th minute.

The goal came courtesy of their reliable goal poacher Ogam who received a well-measured pass from his teammate Dennis Oguta/

The league top scorer then took a fast touch that took the ball past onrushing Gor Mahia goalkeeper Kevin Omondi before easily directing the ball into the net.

The goal silenced Gor Mahia supporters but it did not take long before Austin Odhiambo filled their hearts with joy.

Odhiambo, who was part of the Harambee Stars squad that featured in the recently held Mapinduzi Cup, netted the equalizer in the 69th minute with an exquisite free kick that restored parity.

As the proceedings went on, the two heavyweights tried their best to win the game but their backlines remained solid.

Nonetheless, when both sets of fans were convinced that their beloved clubs were going to share spoils, Ogam struck again.

The 20-year-old, who has been one of the revelations in Kenyan football this season, connected well with Wanjala’s free kick in the 90+3rd minute, guiding Wanjala’s cross into the net to send the Tusker bench into wild celebrations.

The goal was Ogam’s fifteenth of the season and it put him in a very good place of winning the prestigious Golden Boot Award.

Meanwhile, the win helped Tusker retain their position at the top of the standings with 33 points, five more than the second-placed side KCB FC, who played to a 1-1 draw with Nairobi City Stars earlier in the day.

On the other hand, Gor Mahia, who still have two games in hand, remained stuck in the fourth position with 24 points.
