- The 2025 London Marathon will take place on Sunday, April 27.
- Eliud Kipchoge has already won four London Marathon titles in his career.
The greatest marathon runner of all time Eliud Kipchoge has been confirmed for the star-studded 2025 TCS London Marathon.
Kipchoge, who recently celebrated his 40th birthday, was announced yesterday by the organizers of the Abbott World Marathon Majors race.
His entry came as a shock to most athletics fans since they believed the former world record holder would hang his running shoes after the unfortunate events of the Paris Olympic Games.
In Paris, Kipchoge, who was seeking to win the coveted gold medal for a third time in a row, failed to finish a marathon race for the first time in his maiden career.

However, like the fighter he is, the father of three has decided to feature in the London Marathon, where he has triumphed on several occasions in his remarkable career.
“I am excited to share that my next race will be the TCS London Marathon. It is a race that holds a very special place in my heart, filled with so many beautiful memories, and I am eager to create even more. Let us celebrate the joy of running and the collective spirit of thousands of runners coming together at the start line.
It’s a privilege to share this journey with everyone else who will be taking part as we push ourselves to deliver our best performances. After a good period of rest, I have returned to training with renewed energy and focus. I feel re-fueled to give my very best in London,” he was quoted by the organizers.

The five-time Abbott World Marathon Majors winner clinched his maiden London Marathon title in 2015 before triumphing in 2016, 2018 and 2019.
In addition, despite struggling with an ear infection in the 2020 edition, Kipchoge endured the pain and in the end settled for the eighth position.
Oldest London Marathon winner
Besides extending his winning record in the streets of London, Eliud Kipchoge also has an opportunity to enter his name into history books as the oldest person to win the London Marathon elite men’s title.
Since the inception of the road race in March 1981, no one has ever secured the coveted title at the age of 40 or more.
Kipchoge’s rival Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia tried his best in the 2024 edition but he could only settle for a second-place finish behind Alexander Mutiso Munyao of Kenya.
Kipchoge’s opponents in 2025 London Marathon
It will not be a walk in the park for Kipchoge in the 45th edition of the London Marathon because he is set to square it out with a star-studded field.
The field, which has both experienced and inexperienced runners, is one of the best ever assembled in recent years.
From the likes of the highly-rated Sabastian Sawe, who won almost every road race he competed in last year, to the reigning Olympic Games champion Tamirat Tola, a thrilling battle is in store for spectators.
Some of the other top contenders for the race that is expected to take place on Sunday, April 27 include the reigning half marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda, the Kenyan trio of Munyao, Timothy Kiplagat, and Hillary Kipkoech.
Moreover, Kenyan-based Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye, who triumphed in the 2024 New York City Marathon, and home boy Emile Cairess will also assemble at the starting point.
